During the 2011 General Election when talks were rife that the Government
will increase GST once it is elected, the Prime Minister came out to
categorically state that there will be no rise in GST for the next 5 years.

To address claims of GST increase in this election period, the Ministry of
Finance has released a statement saying, “there is no basis to these claims, and
they are inconsistent with what the Government has recently stated”.

This is a very ‘iffy’ statement. The PAP Government is not categorically
saying ‘we will not raise GST for the next 5 years’, like what they did during
the last GE. And we all know that from issues like CPF to population plan, the
PAP has made several policy U-turns.

For example, during the 2006 GE fearing a backlash from voters, the PAP came
out with another ‘iffy’ statement. They said that means-testing may not be
implemented in public hospitals at all, if the cost of administering it
outweighs the benefits of doing so. (ST, 4 May 2006, page 6)
Less than a year after that GE, the PAP backtracked and announced that
means-testing in public hospitals will kick-in.

PAP’s ‘iffy’ statements are unacceptable! If there will not be any GST
increases in the next 5-years than they should come out and categorically
promise voters that – like what they did during the 2011
GE.
