After saying that he didn’t resign from the post of Deputy President of UMNO
but was dismissed instead, and after stating his refusal to be a yes-man, former
Malaysian DPM Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, without naming anyone, blasted Malaysian
leaders for only listening to people beside them and disregarding existing
problems. As a result, they think they are capable of leading the country.

This was reported recently by the Chinese media:

Tan Sri Muhyiddin revealed that after his rousing speech at the division
meeting of UMNO’s Youth & Women wings in Muar recently, he was advised by
someone to taper down and be “more gentle”.

“Because no one told some leaders that they are wrong, these leaders do not
feel that they need to step down,” Tan Sri said.

He stated with sarcasm that he is curious, why those who have expressed their
support for him in private after he was removed as DPM still shake hands with
the leader, and they replied that it was “for survival”.

These supporters do not point out their leaders’ faults and errors, he
snidely remarked.

“But, this is what I told the PM, am I wrong?” he asked.

He added that sometimes, people surrounding the leader will say, “Boss, the
situation is very good, no need to worry. As a result, these leaders cannot see
the existing problems. Instead they feel that they are very good and have lots
of supporters. Whenever they attend any functions, there will be thousands of
attendees.”

“Now, after my speeches in the divisional meetings, you then wanted me to be
mindful of my words? Am I wrong? I am not wrong. I will continue to speak out.
Moreover, these (UMNO divisional meetings) are my only avenue to express myself
externally,” he said.

Indeed, if a leader surrounds himself with yes-men and doesn’t know what the
real ground conditions are, any sense of entitlement that he has and aristocracy
(whether natural or false) will take deep root. Will national problems then be
properly addressed at the highest level?

Former Minister surprised by “deep resentment”

A leader who surrounds himself with yes-men runs the danger of being out of
touch with the ground.

During the last general election in 2011, former Minister Lim Hwee Hua was
surprised by unhappiness and deep resentment against the PAP among the residents
in Aljunied GRC.

After her team lost to WP, she told the media that she always knew “it was a
close fight” in Aljunied GRC but she didn’t expect to lose.

“It is a surprise for us that the resentment is so deep and the unhappiness
is so deep.” In fact, it was only during the campaign, that “we began to fully
appreciate the extent of the unhappiness and resentment towards the Government,
hence the pledge by the PAP team (during the GE campaign) led by Mr George Yeo
for us to have a strong role in the transformation of the PAP itself.”

She described her team’s pledge for transformation within the PAP as
something that the ruling party “really needs to sit up to and to seriously look
at”.

It is not just listening, she said. The PAP government has to go a step
further and take into account Singaporeans’ views if it is to quell the rising
tide of resentment against it.

“I think people still feel that they are not being listened to, and that they
are not being listened to sufficiently; that the party continues to make
policies using its own intellect and reasoning … and occasionally seems to be
arrogant and not wanting to listen even when views are offered. So it’s a
varying degree of unhappiness,” said Mrs Lim.

After the first ever loss of a GRC to the opposition, do you think the PAP
leaders have learnt to listen to the people or are they still surrounded by
yes-men as described by Tan Sri Muhyiddin in Malaysia?

Has the sense of entitlement and aristocracy sunk deeper in our PAP
leaders?

What do you think?
