This raises many questions. Firstly, MG Perry Lim has only taken up the Chief of Army (C0A) appointment for slightly more than a year and by the end of August he would be in charge of the navy, air force and army as Chief of Defence Force(CDF). Is MG Perry ready to take up the appointment after just one year as COA? Or is the succession rushed through just to ensure that the appointment of CDF is filled while LG Ng is retired with a high chance that he might be rushed into politics in the upcoming elections?

The second question is as such. BG Melvyn Ong, similar to MG Perry is only one year into his appointment as the Chief Guards Officer. Furthermore, unlike MG Perry, he has barely completed his first year into his current appointment and now he is being pushed into the appointment of COA. Is the succession of MG Perry by BG Melvyn as COA a rushed succession for the sake of filling up the appointments brought about by LG Ng’s retirement, supposedly to join politics?

These are crucial questions because how can MINDEF guarantee that the SAF can and will continue to remain a peak fighting force with their generals rushed into key appointments after just over a year in their current respective appointments, where they are still learning the ropes and without yet gaining sufficient experience in managing such a large appointment before moving up the ladder?

Could MINDEF shed light on how the succession process works for the top brass in the armed forces, promotion policies, succession benchmarks and protocol?
