The Singapore ruling PAP Government has in recent time planned a number of developments ahead of the next General Election. A new 3,000 square meter hawker center was announced yesterday (July 19) at Pasir Ris Town Park by the PAP MP cum Minister Teo Chee Hean. Today (July 20) a new underground linkway between Yishun MRT station and Northpoint City was announced. The two projects are both due to be completed in 2017. Last month, a new hospital, Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, was built in Jurong Lakeside District.

Also due in 2017, part 3 of the Downtown Line will be completed with its existing part 2 due for operations by December this year. The Singapore Government also announced in December 2014 that the new billion dollar airport, Project Jewel, will be ready by 2018. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong also announced in his last National Day Rally Speech that the Jurong Lake Gardens will be reconstructed along with a new Science Centre.

It appears Singaporeans can look forward to new developments for at least the next 5 years, and it is clear the ruling PAP Government is wooing them with these new buildings.

However, these physical buildings may be welcome, the social aspect of Singapore hardly sees any development. In fact, the social problems of last election looks to be recycled in the coming one. Cost of living, housing affordability, overcrowding population, falling birth rate, longest working hours, lack of work-life balance, inability to retire and growing income gap, continue to be problems of yesteryears which PM Lee Hsien Loong has no solution to.

To be fair, the current PAP administration have attempted, albeit half-heartedly, by introducing compulsory national insurance, compulsory annuity and property cooling measures. However, these new policies are relatively ineffective and do not live up to the people’s expectations for a better standard of living.

It remains to be seen if Singaporeans will overlook their social well-being and be persuaded by these billions of tax dollars spent in the guise of economic growth by casting their vote for the PAP.
