KUALA LUMPUR, July 20 — Prime minister and presidents are ephemeral and should go when they perform poorly or become involved in irregularities, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad told detractors criticising him for seeking to oust an elected head of government.

Pointing out that his demand for Datuk Seri Najib Razak was not unique abroad or in Malaysia, Dr Mahathir pointed out that Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi faced and eventually succumbed to a similar campaign when he was prime minister.

“All over the world elected presidents and prime ministers have been asked or forced to step down and they all did. In fact in some countries, if something untoward happens, ministers, prime ministers step down.

“So don’t be silly and demand that since Najib was elected, no one has a right to ask him to step down,” Dr Mahathir wrote in a blog post this evening.

Abdullah also chose to resign following pressure over the results of Election 2008, Dr Mahathir said when pointing out that Barisan Nasional (BN) fared worse under Najib in the general election five years later.

Dr Mahathir insisted that Najib should resign as prime minister and BN chairman given the poorer showing.

“If Abdullah was prepared to step down, Najib after his poor performance in the general election should not even offer to be the PM,” he added.

Dr Mahathir also disputed claims that voting reforms within Umno has made party elections more democratic, claiming that the purpose of change was to limit the number of “entities” involved rather than making the selection of leaders more open.

“Far from making Umno elections more democratic, Najib has actually restricted the right to vote from ordinary members to just the divisions. And Najib has a strangle-hold over most of the division heads.”

Dr Mahathir has made allegations against 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) as the cornerstone of his campaign to remove Najib from office, and has variously claimed that the firm’s funds have gone “missing”, “vanished” or “disappeared”.*
