SINGAPORE: It will likely take a few days for investigations into Tuesday night's train disruptions to the North-South and East-West Lines to be completed, said Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew.

He was speaking to the media at Ang Mo Kio MRT station on Wednesday morning (Jul 8), where he was observing train operations the morning after the 3.5-hour train disruption had paralysed both lines.

Mr Lui added he was at the operations centre at the Land Transport Authority at 6am to get an update on what happened overnight, before subsequently taking the train to Ang Mo Kio MRT station.

"Last night's disruptions were really massive across both lines. I'm sorry that it has affected so many commuters during the evening peak hour. Many of them faced uncertainty, many of them faced disruptions to their normal routine," said Mr Lui.

CHECKS ON TRACKS, TRAINS, SUBSTATIONS

Over the course of the night, authorities have tried to systematically identify the root cause of the disruptions last evening, Mr Lui said.

He noted that SMRT has done visual checks on the entire fleet of trains. Checks on the electrical resistance in trains were also conducted as a suspected electrical issue may have caused the disruption.

Mr Lui said while engineers were not able to finish checking all the trains, a "substantial number" had been checked. Checks on the MRT tracks were also conducted. But Mr Lui said given the large network and limited engineering hours, they were not able to fully complete the visual checks on all the tracks.

Checks on all substations also showed that there were no problems, he added.

Mr Lui noted that for safety reasons, it was decided that train services would run at a reduced speed during the morning peak hours. This is because there had been intermittent trips even till the end of service last night.

"Because there were fewer trains running last night, we were able to reset it, make sure the trains were not stuck between stations, so there were intermittent trips especially along the North South line through the remaining services hours," said Mr Lui.

LTA said train service on both lines resumed this morning at 5.30am and no power trips have been observed so far.

According to Mr Lui, LTA will prioritise checking trains that have not undergone the electrical resistance test and this will continue throughout the course of the day. It is hoped that the entire fleet will have gone through this check before the evening peak hours, he said.

Mr Lui added that the investigation into last night's MRT disruption will likely take a few days. "I don't think another COI (Committee of Inquiry) is necessary. LTA and SMRT must focus on finding the root of the problem," he said.
