88% of Singaporeans under 30 are happy: Survey

Singaporeans often describe ourselves as 'complain-kings', but a recent Survey by online ticketing platform Peatix has found that nearly nine in 10 Singaporeans (88 per cent) aged 30 and below are happy.

Results from the survey of 600 Singapore respondents provide a stark contrast to previous reports which have claimed that Singaporeans are an unhappy bunch.

According to Peatix's report, as many as 88 per cent of respondents said they are happy with their current lifestyle. Of these, at least 63 per cent said they attended at least one event a month.

The top three reasons for attending events were "to learn and experience something new" (74 per cent), "to spend time with friends" (45 per cent) as well as "to do something different" (43 per cent).

The most attended events in Singapore were in the genres of food and drink (54 per cent), classes and workshops (50 per cent) and concerts and gigs (48 per cent).

A total of 74 per cent of the respondents would also consider organising an event in the future, and more than half of those who currently organise events are under the age of 30. The main motivation of these young event organisers is to "share their passion" with anyone else who may be interested, regardless of the topic at hand.

Additionally, business-savvy people seem to be the ones who are increasingly interested in organising events such as professional networking events for their business (22 per cent), with an almost-equal number of them (23 per cent) stating they are likely to attend start-up and entrepreurial events.

In fact, a quarter of respondents anticipate more start-up and business-related events in Singapore in the future.

Some of the most popular venues amongst Singaporeans under 30 include Suntec Singapore Convention Centre, The Star Theatre at Buona Vista and The Esplanade, which came out tops.

Co-founder and Head of Asia at Peatix Ms Emi Takemura said: "Over the past few years there have been reports of Singaporeans being 'under-happy' at work, but based [on] these results, it seems events can provide an avenue for much needed reprieve through meaningful experiences."

"Rather than remaining unhappy or being unsatisfied with their quality of life, we find many to be proactive in either participating in or bringing communities together through events," says Takemura.

"Singapore's events scene is already thriving as it is, and these survey results show an even more promising possibility of what's to come."
