The Land Transport Authority’s (LTA) mystery-shopper operations failed to prosecute a taxi driver how the latter was sentenced not guilty by the Singapore Court. A seven-seater premium SMRT taxi driver, Tan Kwan Long, was standing outside his vehicle parked just outside the Marina Bay Sands casino when he was approached by two LTA plain clothes officers masquerading as passengers.
Two LTA officers asked the driver if he could give them along with five other LTA officers a ride to Sentosa, the driver then quoted them S$60 and the the seven LTA officers got on the ride. The LTA prosecution claimed that the driver did not follow the taxi company procedures by not starting his taxi fare meter and then overcharge for a trip that is estimated to be only S$18.65.

The taxi driver faced a charge of fares over-charging by the LTA prosecution in court on Monday (June 15), but he was later sentenced not guilty by the court because the judge believe the taxi companies should have regulation provisions for ad hoc private arrangements between drivers and passengers. The LTA prosecution is however dissatisfied and has appealed against the court judgment.
