The number of people experiencing homelessness for the first time has spiked as skyrocketing Sydney rents force tenants into arrears, according to one of the country's leading welfare groups.

Evidence collected by welfare organisation Vinnies shows the housing crisis has now hit people not traditionally affected by homelessness such as low income or casual workers.
Vinnies chief executive Michael Perusco said the rise in first-time homelessness was deeply concerning.
"We are seeing a much greater increase in first-time homelessness," he said.
"We're seeing a lot of people on low incomes who have a life event which causes financial difficulty and suddenly they are in arrears with their rent with no hope of catching up. This is the group slipping into homelessness. As
