Malaysian gets jail and 24 strokes of the cane for rape and robbery

SINGAPORE — A Malaysian man was today (May 28) sentenced to 17 years’ jail and 24 strokes of the cane for raping and robbing a woman in Paya Lebar in March 2013.
Chang Kar Meng, 27, was on his way home at about 1.30am on March 8, 2013, when he saw his victim, a foreigner married to a Singaporean, at the void deck of her block of flats. She was carrying a sling bag and looking at her mobile phone.
Short of cash, Chang — who was a kitchen staff at a Raffles Place cafe — took off his slippers and approached the woman intending to rob her. He hit her from the back to make her unconscious. While she was unconscious, Chang robbed her, and as he lifted her, he became aroused upon contact with her body.
He then dragged her to a nearby grass patch and raped her. The woman, 35, had regained consciousness by then but pretended otherwise as she was afraid.
Chang took photos of the woman’s breasts with his phone after the act.
