SINGAPORE - Singaporean air steward Vincent Chee died in a local hospital in Urumqi in Xinjiang on Tuesday night after suffering from a stroke while on a Cathay Pacific flight from Hong Kong to Frankfurt last week.

Mr Chee was working on flight CX289 on May 7 when he fainted at around 6am, according to a report in Apple Daily.

The plane made an emergency landing in Urumqi in Xinjiang, where Mr Chee was taken to a hospital, before continuing on to Frankfurt.

According to evening daily Shin Min, the hospital confirmed that Mr Chee had died on the night of May 12.

In an interview with Shin Min, a Cathay Pacific spokesperson said that the company would "provide all the necessary assistance to Mr Chee's family."

Mr Chee had worked for Cathay Pacific for 20 years, and was based in Hong Kong.
