SINGAPORE — He had harboured a grudge against a housemate who told him off for not closing a door quietly, thus interrupting his sleep.

About a month later, Feng Zhangao launched an alcohol-induced attack on Mr Wei Liangliang by throwing punches and even biting off his housemate’s left ear lobe.

Feng, a 25-year-old Chinese citizen working as a welder here, was today (May 12) sentenced to four months’ jail after he pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing hurt to Mr Wei, 31.

A district court heard that the incident happened on March 15 in their Woodlands Drive 62 flat. At about 9pm, Feng had consumed about four cans of beer and was “emboldened” to confront Mr Wei, also a Chinese national.
Mr Wei was heading for bed when Feng confronted him and tried to kick him in the stomach.

Both men exchanged punches and Feng then bit Mr Wei’s left ear lobe. The fight stopped when Feng saw Mr Wei’s detached ear lobe.

Mr Wei then called the police while Feng fled to his company premises, where he was later arrested.

A medical report from Khoo Teck Puat Hospital showed that Mr Wei’s left ear lobe was “allegedly bitten off by an alcohol intoxicated roommate”. The ear lobe was preserved in ice before it could be re-attached, the court heard.
Seeking a sentence of four months’ jail, Deputy Public Prosecutor Marcus Foo said Feng was “clearly the aggressor in the alcohol-fuelled event”.

In his mitigation written in Mandarin, Feng, who was not represented in court today, pleaded for leniency, adding that he would “like to return to (my) hometown as soon as possible”.

In sentencing Feng, District Judge Lee Poh Choo said violence between fellow dormitory residents cannot be tolerated.

Judge Lee also ordered Feng to compensate Mr Wei S$2,765 for medical fees and loss of income due to 37 days of medical leave.

Feng’s sentence is backdated to March 17, when he was first remanded. He could have been jailed up to two years and/or fined S$5,000.
