Background Story: Is the Prime Minister's pay really high? (http://therealsingapore.com/content/prime-minister%E2%80%99s-pay-really-high)
To Gintai, please share the following points with “Lao Si”:
He has to compare apples to apples and not oranges. Businessmen are in the commercial sector driven by profit whereas political office is NOT a commercial venture. If political office is tarnished with profit motivations, then inevitably you will have blatant corruption and all sorts of injustices in society.
When businessmen setup their companies they take on risks and provide innovation or goods/services for consumers. They risks LOSSES if their company fails or their goods/services do not work or is not required by society. Private businesses also do NOT exact any compulsory Taxes or forces you to work for them, or pay them for their products if you do not wish to. Capitalism is a willing buyer, wiling seller transaction. So, if they make money or lose money the businessmen deserves it.

Now, compare that to Political space. Politicians arguably provide important public goods/services but bear in mind they are Elected by the people to do their jobs during their term. I hope we’re long gone from the era of Kingdoms where Father’s fiefdom hands down to the Son. Nevertheless, the original purpose of Democracy is to remove such unbearable social inequalities and have an elected representative personnel for ease of national decision-making.
Politicians rarely provide any innovation other than new taxes, and they have no risk of personal losses, for whatever uses they deem right in allocating tax funds, whether for investment or otherwise. And Lastly, politicians forces you via legislation to transact with them via compulsory taxes, and hence you have a right to question their policies and their use of your tax monies, whether to pay themselves handsomely or if they lost it in unsound investments.
Ask yourself this: If we are all NOT mandated to pay Taxes, do you think we would be bothered by how much politicians pay themselves? Thus, It is not the amount of money but the Principal behind public service vis-a-vis private enterprise and the 2 should not and cannot mix. Its like religion and secular politics or religion and money, mix them up and the whole society is ruined eventually.
Compare Apples with Apples
