Man keeps defective old S'pore $1-note for 30 years -- and cannot believe how much it's worth now

Sixty-year-old Mr Fu did not think much about the old $1 Singapore note that his wife had kept.

It had some sort of manufacturing error, making an edge of the note stick out.

According to Lianhe Wanbao, he got it in the 1980s from an ATM in Bukit Timah.

At that time, he thought it was weird that an ATM would dispense a defective note, but did not dwell too much on it and put it at home.

His wife then continued keeping it when they married in the 90s.

Two years ago, Mr Fu's wife passed away due to an illness, and he was packing her belongings when he rediscovered the note.

He had almost forgotten about its existence.

Bringing it to mint shops near Sungei Road and Chinatown, he learnt that people have offered $1,700 for the note.

However, Mr Fu is unwilling to part with his unique dollar bill. He says that he will temporarily keep it till "fate" brings a person to him.

When the Chinese paper spoke a collector, he said that at that time, checks were probably not as strict so there were more defective notes.

However, he said that what contributed to this note's value was that its defect was quite big, and that it was kept in mint condition.

Had it been in bigger denomination, like a 50-dollar note, it would have attracted the attention of many people.
