Taiwanese singer Jay Chou has released a video of his fairytale wedding to 21-year-old sweetheart Hannah Quinlivan, which took place at the UK’s 900-year-old Selby Abbey yesterday.

The two-minute film begins with shots of the bridesmaids, wearing above-the-knee, peach-coloured gowns and the groom’s ushers walking down the aisle, before a slow-motion shot shows Chou striding confidently along the red carpet with one hand tucked casually into his pocket.

The bride is then seen being escorted up the aisle, lit with dozens of candles, her wedding dress train trailing behind her, before her hand is given to Chou.

In a sign of the times, where once guests may have been misty-eyed and dabbing at their faces with handkerchiefs, many can be seen gawping at their tiny smartphone screens, filming the couple as they pass by to the music of a classical chamber ensemble.

The YouTube video ends with Chou, 36, lifting his bride’s veil and planting a lengthy kiss on her lips as the video camera pans around the pair.

The video clip generated an outpour of well wishes from his fans and admirers around the world.

“I am thankful to have lived in an era with Jay Chou. Watching the film and listening to the melody, I am truly moved,” Hao Che, who has been a fan for 14 years, said in a comment on YouTube. “I wish you will be happy forever and [I] hope to continue to enjoy your music in the future.”

“You are my first idol, [your music has] been with me from childhood to adulthood,” said a user called YuChing Wu. “Thank you for giving us wonderful memories. Wish both of you can share beautiful memories with each other too.”

Selby Abbey, founded in 1069 and built by the de Lacy family, was closed to the public for two days over the weekend. Its website states the cost of the ceremony is £445 (HK$5,000) with the option of adding extras, such as an organist for another £118.

Rules governing weddings are strict in the UK. The Selby Abbey website states that a number of criteria must be fulfilled, with most requiring one half of a couple to have lived in the parish for a fixed period of time. If a couple has no connection to the Abbey or its surrounds, then a couple can opt for a blessing at the Abbey, as it is not covered by the UK’s Marriage Law – but the ceremony itself must take place elsewhere.

The service on Sunday attracted about 50 friends and family, according to reports, with guests reportedly told in advance only that they should go to London and be prepared to take a connecting flight.
