SINGAPORE: Four people were charged with cheating a ministry and three statutory boards by inflating the expenditure of the Hari Raya decorative lights on Thursday morning (Jan 8).

Of the four, three were ex-members of Malay-Muslim community organisation Majlis Pusat, Gazaly Malek and Abdul Ghani Tahir as well as the organisation's ex-president Saharudin Kassim. A local businessman Salleh Sam was also charged.

The four faced between five to 11 charges of abetting to cheat the then-Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports, Singapore Tourism Board, National Population and Talent Division and the Tote Board by inflating the expenses of the lights amounting to between S$130,768 and S$351,241 in 2011 and 2012.

From September 2011 to October 2012, the ministry and three statutory boards made separate payments to Majlis Pusat of between S$49,680 and S$200,000.

In total, the ministry and the statutory boards disbursed S$914,511 to Majlis Pusat for the expenses of the decorative lights
