SINGAPORE - Fewer Housing Development Board (HDB) residents are satisfied with their flats and neighbourhoods now, even though overall satisfaction levels remained high at over 90 per cent.

This was revealed in the latest Sample Household Survey, which is conducted by HDB every five years.

In the latest survey, which was carried out between Jan and Aug 2013 and involved close to 8,000 households in all HDB towns or estates, over 91 per cent of HDB households were satisfied with their flat, down from 96.4 per cent in 2008, with respondents citing concerns with the condition of their ageing flats.

Residents' satisfaction with their neighbourhoods also fell from 95.1 per cent in 2008 to 92 per cent, with those dissatisfied citing inconsiderate neighbours as the main reason.

However, satisfaction with the provision of estate facilities increased to 96.1 per cent in 2013, up from 94.4 per cent in 2008.

The survey also found that nine in 10 homeowners found their flat to be value for money, with a slightly higher proportion coming from households in mature towns and estates, citing their flats' good location and the well-connected transportation network.

A higher proportion of residents also indicated that they engaged in neighbourly interactions, while the proportion of residents who interacted with neighbours from other ethnic groups or nationalities also went up fro, 77 per cent in 2008 to 85.7 per cent in 2013.

The survey results also reflected older residents' preference to live near their married children. The proportion of younger married couples living with or in close proximity to their parents increased from 35.5 per cent to 36.7 per cent.

The proportion of older residents living with their married children also increased to 19.1 per cent in 2013, up from 14.3 per cent in 2008.

Commenting on the results in his blog, Minister of National Development Mr Khaw Boon Wan said that the survey results enable better understanding of HDB residents' changing needs and expectations, and provide useful information for policy reviews and improvements to town design.

He noted that the survey had found that there was strong desire among the elderly to age in their present flats, with over four out of five elderly households saying they had no intention to move within the next five years.

"We will work harder to cater to such needs. We will also have to do more to familiarise them with the various monetisation options, such as the Lease Buyback Scheme and Silver Housing Bonus," Mr Khaw added.
