Quote:
The jobs being created in Singapore are mainly low-paying jobs which mean that Singaporeans looking for jobs would have to accept low wages if they want to find a job.

There was a total of 67,400 job vacancies for September 2014, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) announced last week.

However, the jobs with the most vacancies are shop sales assistants, with 3,730 vacancies and security guards with 2,250 vacancies. Wait staff has the third most vacancies, at 2,200.

This means that the jobs with the most vacancies also pay the lowest wages, of an average of about $1,000.

The monthly median wage for shop sales assistant is only $1,250. For security guards, it is an even lower $817. For waiters, they would earn only $1,050.

However, Singaporeans have indicated that a wage of $1,000 is not enough to survive in Singapore. The latest Household Expenditure Survey showed that the poorest 20 percent of households earn only $2,022 but they have to spend $2,231, which means that they are not earning enough to use.

By industry, these jobs also makes up the second largest number of vacancies - there were 8,750 vacancies in the wholesale and retail trade sector.

What's worse is that of the 67,500 jobs, only 13,060 job vacancies require a degree and above.

This means that 81 percent of jobs do not require a degree.

In fact, there were 14,720 job vacancies which require Primary School level education and below, such as for cleaners, waiters and security guards.

The government has taken to discouraging Singaporeans from studying for degrees, in a bid to reduce the unemployment among degree holders.

However, the government has refused to define a poverty line or to set a minimum wage to increase the wages of workers to a acceptance level for subsistence living.

It is likely that the job vacancy situation in Singapore will continue to be lopsided as long as the government does not implement policies to uplift wages at the bottom to protect the livelihoods of low-income workers.

Now you know why our Sinkie gahmen wants fewer Sinkies to pursue tertiary education. We don't need so many degree holders to be waiters and security guards. If we need degree holders, then we hire and fire quickly from abroad, such as fine countries like the Philippines and India.

Thank God for good leadership from PAP and NTUC to shape our labour policies
