SINGAPORE - Fancy helping out a retired veteran? Many may not know that the Military Working Dog Unit (MWDU), a wing under the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), holds a regular adoption drive for its retired military dogs.
The SAF is on the lookout for good homes for their canines who no longer work at MWDU, where they should be companion dogs, and not guard dogs.
According to Cyberpioneer, SAF's in-house publication, the dogs have undergone basic obedience training and have had their health checks by the unit's veterinarians. They are also up to date on their annual vaccinations, and undergo a heartworm prevention programme.
The unit's dogs are usually retired when they reach 8 years old.
Interested adopters can get in touch with the MWDU hotline at 6424 6623 for an appointment.
Potential adopters are screened, as a trainer will conduct a house visit to assess living conditions, before final approval is given.
As these are large breed dogs, potential homes must be able to accommodate them. If there are no adopters, the SAF will continue to care for the retired dogs until their last day.
