An armed man who went on a carjacking spree in eastern China was shot dead by police in broad daylight, in a dramatic scene that resembled something from the video game Grand Theft Auto.

The 33-year-old suspect, surnamed Xin, hijacked four cars in quick succession, threatening the drivers with a customised nail gun, according to the police in Shandong city, Qingdao province.

Xin first held up a Honda Odyssey sedan in his home village of Zhifang on Saturday morning, then drove further around Qingdao before abandoning the car to intercept a Nissan Teana.

His road rampage continued, with Xin stealing a Jaguar and a Land Rover sport utility vehicle, each time pulling out the drivers at gunpoint – echoing the violent gameplay of Grand Theft Auto, in which users play armed criminals who steal cars in tough US neighbourhoods.

Qingdao police deployed three vehicles carrying special forces police, who tracked him down at a busy intersection in Chengyang district at around 9am, according to the portal Qingdaonews.com.

The officers arrived just as Xin – pushed back by the driver of a Mercedes SUV he tried to hijack – stopped a taxi and tried to force the cabbie into the stolen Land Rover.

A video apparently recorded by a passerby showed Xin, pointing his nail gun at police, jumping out of the Land Rover and chasing off one of the policemen who tried to approach.

Xin crumpled to the ground when he was shot by another policeman. But he still raised his weapon, prompting an officer to fire several more rounds at Xin.

Xin was taken to hospital but died, the report said, citing police.

The customised nail gun Xin wielded during the carjacking spree.

Authorities said Xin had a long criminal record. He was convicted for illegal confinement, harbouring drug abusers and illegal possession of firearms over the past few years.

Police are still investigating what triggered Xin’s actions.

Grand Theft Auto is banned in China for its adult themes and violence, including a feature that allows players to attack virtual pedestrians, including women. However, pirated copies of the game are easily available.
