Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen is on an official visit to China from 8 to 14 November 2014.

He made his first stop to the controversial bilateral military exercise between the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and the People's Liberation Army (PLA), Exercise COOPERATION 2014.

This is Singapore and China's third exercise together.

The first two exercises involved non-conventional counter-terrorism scenarios.

This current one included conventional infantry scenarios.

The joint exercise involved 70 soldiers each from the SAF and the PLA. It is being conducted over nine days from 1 to 9 November 2014. Today is the last day.

Dr Ng visited the exercise with Commander Nanjing Military Region General (GEN) Cai Yingting.

Dr Ng also attended the closing ceremony, which was co-officiated by Brigadier-General Lim Hock Yu, Chief of Staff - General Staff, and Deputy Commander Nanjing Military Region Lieutenant-General You Haitao.

He was hosted to an official dinner by Commander of the Nanjing Military Region GEN Cai tonight.

The joint exercise has gotten flak from Singaporeans as to why the Singapore government is holding military exercises with China's Chinese Communist Party.

The Singapore government has recently banned Ms Tan Pin Pin's film, 'To Singapore with Love', on the claim that the film's portrayal of exiles whom were part of the communist movement, is a threat to national security.

However, Singaporeans have questioned the Singapore government's own involvement with the Chinese communist government instead.
