The Sim Lim Square just cannot seem to stay out of the news recently – this time, a man was fined $5,000 and another jailed for a month for being part of an unlawful assembly to cause hurt to another man.
On June 29, Danial Ryan Salleh was at the Million Tech shop and when he thought no one was looking, he stole some earphones. But a shop assistant caught him in the act and detained him.
Salleh then put up a fight which caused some onlookers to go and take a look.
Tan Peng Wong, 27, and Mizuta Teruhito, 29, were two of them.
Mizuta then whipped up his camera phone to film the incident.
At that time, Salleh had already challenged the shop assistant to a fight.
And when he saw Mizuta filming the incident, he then went over to Mizuta to punch him.
Just then, Lin Guoming, Yeo Yong Hua, both 28, and Gan Guo Rong, 30, also joined in and punched Salleh back.
So did Mizuta.
Salleh fell to the ground.

He was then beaten while he laid on the floor. The beating finally stopped when the shop assistant stopped them.
For that, Tan was fined $5,000 but Mizuta was given a heavier sentence of one month in prison.
The sentencing for Lin, Yeo and Gan are is still pending.
In his mitigation, Tan’s lawyer, Peter Fernando, asked the court to let Tan off with a fine as he said, Tan was not heavily involved in the incident as all he did was swing his arm at Salleh.
Mr Fernando also said that Salleh was then a threat to those who at the shop and had provoked his assailant’s attacks.
Mr Fernando also said that Tan had tried to stop the fight peacefully, without hurting Salleh. CCTV footage showed this to be the case.
How a case of stealing can lead to a fight, or how a bags of coins can be strewn on the floor after a refund is unknown. It seems Sim Lim Square does not seem to stop with the surprises.
