Minister Tan Chuan Jin shared in parliament that the government has only caught 150 foreigners for having submitted fake information and credentials on their work pass applications since 2012.
He was responding to a question by Gerald Giam, in light of the recent cases of foreigners having exposed to have fake degrees.
Mr Tan highlighted that those who have been caught were sentenced to jail following which their work passes were revoked and they were barred from working in Singapore ever again.
Minister Tan also shared that credentials are not the only factors considered when a work pass is granted. For example, the Employment Passes (EP) are granted on a variety of factors including salary level, experience and qualification.
Applicants are then screened to see if they would possess expertise and capabilities to contribute to Singapore’s economy.
He also said that the government recently tightened regulations in 2012 and it regularly requires applicants to upload proof of their educational qualifications and the government also engages with third party oversees screening agencies to verify the details.
Other measures include cross-checking the qualifications with the educational institutions that awarded them.
He noted that the penalties for making false declarations were also increased in 2012 so that the maximum fine is $20,000 with up to 2 years in jail.
"MOM will take strong actions against those who make false declarations in work pass applications. If members of the public know of such offences, they should report the matter to MOM," said Mr Tan.
