UBER’S FREE TAXI RIDES DAY TAKES CUSTOMERS ON A RIDE

On 23 October 2014, Uber launched its second offer to give out free tax rides (https://www.facebook.com/UberSingapore/posts/366359426859901). However, a series of missteps caused an avalanche of dismay from commuters.
According to Uber, “Everyone island-wide is invited to enjoy two free Ubertaxi rides up to $35 each. (http://blog.uber.com/FreeTaxisThisThursday)”
However, many people were not able to get the free rides.

Some people said they were still charged even though their trip was less than $35 or for their second trip.

Uber informed the commuters to email them for any refunds or problems faced but many people complained that there “was no response”.

Not everyone was unhappy with Uber though. A handful of commuters praised the promotion.

However, most people were. A commuter shared how under Uber’s promotion, they were “allowed to go (to) one destination under Uber’s policy” even though there were four people among them who had to go to different places.

A person warned the other commuters how “the taxi driver picked up the wrong person without checking the identity” and that “the passengers are now travelling to their destination and charging to (her) account.”

Another person shared how the taxi she was waiting for did not turn up and called the driver “plain irresponsible”.

There was also an instance where the Uber “app went offline” and the “journey ended without the driver being able to key in the fare”. The taxi driver was nice enough not to ask her to pay but “requested that (she) contact Uber so that he get paid.”

It looks like even though this is Uber’s second “free” promotion, there seems to be many kinks that needs to be ironed out, included ironing out the technical problems and coordinating with its drivers on implementing the promotion.
Until then, whether commuters would still trust Uber will depend on whether they can get things right at their next promotion. But hey, who wouldn’t want a free ride?
Uber is a San Francisco-based app founded in 2009 and backed by Google Ventures.
