According to an Institute of Police Studies (IPS) survey commissioned by the Government funded Council for Third Age, most Singaporeans want to keep working past retirement.

The report released today found that 90% felt that continuing to work after retirement is a good way to stay financially independent and stay connected with society. Others felt that it gave the elderly a sense of self-worth.

The survey took responses from over 2000 peoplee aged between 50 and 74.

It also found that while many elderly acknowledged the benefits of working past retirement, only 53% actually felt there were enough job opportunities for seniors. 48% felt that there wasn’t enough jobs that matched their skills and experience.

Another interesting thing is that more than 60% of respondents felt most employers prefer younger workers

The report noted that in general, older Singaporeans saw the benefit of working in retirement and felt positive about their employability.

In terms of continuing learning, 90% of older Singaporeans said that it is important to continue learning even in old age as it helps the elderly stay relevant.

However, only 58% knew that there were continuing education and training courses offered and only 17% had actually taken steps to try and get enrolled in such a course.
The report concluded that most Singaporeans value working past retirement and understand the benefit of lifelong learning.

However there is still a very big difference between knowing that there are benefits to working past retirement and “wanting” to continue working past retirement.
Publishing a report that shows that 90% feel there are benefits to working does not mean that this 90% want to keep working.

For most, they would enjoy retirement if they had the money to retire but due to a failed CPF system and lack of welfare, many simply can’t afford to do so and therefore have no choice but to continue working.

Do you "want" to keep working past retirement?
