A small band of PLA troops are joining their US counterparts and Australian army hosts for an exercise to learn survival skills in the harsh Australian Outback.

Exercise Kowari is the first joint drill between the three militaries and runs until October 25. The exercise takes its name from a rare and tiny marsupial that lives in one of Australia's least forgiving desert regions.

In the coming weeks, 10 soldiers each from the PLA and Australian army, plus five US soldiers and five US Marines, will be trained in bush survival skills in coast and inland regions of the Northern Territory. They will be instructed, in large part, by Australia's unique Norforce, a locally based reserve infantry regiment of which more than 60 per cent are indigenous soldiers, all experts in bush skills.

The exercise was announced during a visit to Australia in July by General Fan Changlong , Vice-Chairman of the Central Military Commission.

Following their meeting, Australian Defence Minister David Johnston hailed the forging of closer defence relations between the countries.

"Exercise Kowari is a firm demonstration of all three countries' intent to work together towards enhancing mutual trust and regional stability," the minister said.

China also participated in the US-led Rimpac multinational naval exercises in Hawaii in July. It was hailed as a sign of improved military ties - even though the PLA Navy sent an uninvited electronic surveillance ship to possibly eavesdrop on the exercise.
