Taipei, Oct. 10 (CNA) Thirty-six people have been saved but nine others remain unaccounted for after a research vessel sank off the outlying island of Penghu on Friday night, according to the Coast Guard Administration (CGA).
Among those rescued, one person suffered a bone fracture and another was not fully conscious, the agency said as rescue efforts continued Friday night.
The CGA said the RV Ocean Researcher 5 may have run into a reef when it was sailing 3 nautical miles southeast of Guoye in Penghu Friday afternoon.
Forty-five people on board were stranded after the ship tilted toward one side and began to take in water. The ship sank at 8:11 p.m, and many of the people on board took to rubber rafts to row to safety, the agency said.
The Coast Guard, the Navy and the National Airborne Service Corps under the Ministry of the Interior were all contributing to the rescue efforts.
The 2,700-ton RV OR5, with a maximum speed of 12 knots, falls under the Ministry of Science and Technology's National Applied Research Laboratories.

（中央社記者張榮祥台南11日電）海研五號昨晚在澎湖外海沉沒。由於海研五號是國內唯一300 0噸級的海研 船，短期內重創台灣遠洋探測能量。
海研五號是成功大學教授高家俊擔任國家實驗研究院海洋中心主任時一手監造的，目賭下水啟用；昨 晚得知海研五 號出事，2人不治，高家俊徹夜難眠，不解這麼大噸級的學術研究船為何會出事。
高家俊說，海研五號是目前僅次於海軍「達觀艦」外、民間最大的學術研究船，噸位2700公噸， 裝備一流，被 賦予政治經濟及軍事等多重研究目標，首要任務是探勘海底礁層，確定國家主權。
他表示，海研五號同時研究可燃冰蘊藏能量，作為生質能源研究的重要基礎，另還牽涉到海軍作戰能 力層面的海洋 水文研究。
高家俊說，海研五號2013年正式出海執行作業，迄今才1年半，此行是受環保署委託，研究海洋 污染物。
他說，海研五號出事，海象不佳是主因之一，但風大不是最大理由，交通部應儘快查明是否有人為或 機械原因，才 能給死傷者及家屬一個交代。
高家俊表示，海研五號救生設備都是國際認證，才能在船難發生之初，即時發揮救難效果。
3000噸級的海研五號主要負責遠洋探測任務，對於台灣近海的科學探測而言，海研一號依然是無可取代的 主力 船艦。但目前的海研一號、二號、三號都屬250噸的小船，尤其海研一號使用已長達30年，研究 做一半被迫中 斷的情況時有所聞，這次折損最精銳的海研五號，重創台灣海洋探測能量。1031011
