HK shares sink as pro-democracy protests turn violent

HONG KONG: Hong Kong shares ended 1.90 percent lower on Monday (Sep 29) after tumbling more than two percent in early trade, following weekend clashes between pro-democracy protesters and police while parts of the financial hub remained closed down.
The Hang Seng Index fell 449.20 points to 23,229.21 on turnover of HK$88.94 billion (US$11.48 billion). The index had slumped 2.31 percent in early trade.*
But in China the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.43 percent, or 9.99 points, to 2,357.71 on turnover of 171.1 billion yuan (US$27.9 billion). The Shenzhen Composite Index, which tracks stocks on China's second exchange, gained 0.94 percent, or 12.34 points to 1,324.94 on turnover of 200.3 billion yuan.
The stand-off, the worst since the handover in 1997, saw police fire tear gas into crowds of thousands of protesters on Sunday and has led to the closure of several businesses, bank branches and schools. Protest leaders have vowed not to back down until Beijing gives in to their demands for full universal suffrage.
