National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan said today that new citizens play an important role in welcoming newly arrived foreigners.

He explained that since they have just experienced the same challenges of adapting to a new environment, they can better understand the struggles of new arrivals in integrating into Singapore culture.

Khaw was speaking at a citizenship ceremony which was held at Republic Poly this morning where a new batch of 194 new citizens received their citizenship certificates. Included in this batch was 32 families which applied for citizenship together as a family unit.

This is not the only citizenship ceremony this weekend with a total of 3,150 new citizens going to be having their citizenship ceremonies at 14 different locations around Singapore this weekend.

Khaw Boon Wan highlighted one of the new citizen at the ceremony, Ms Sylvia Liew, who is a physiotherapist at a public hospital. He explained how Ms Liew was already contributing to Singapore through her work and he said that others should also ensure they are contributing.

He suggested that they take up volunteering or doing grassroots and community activates.

Khaw Bon Wan also emphasised that Singapore is a multi racial, multi religious community that enjoys a lot of harmony. "We must treasure it. We must certainly not take our peace and harmony for granted." he said.

Khaw said that the ability to rise above our differences and live harmoniously together is what will define Singapore and show that our society is mature and progressive.
He suggested that new citizens also play a role in building better relationships not just between races but also in building bridges with newly arrived foreigners so that Singapore can continue to enjoy good harmony.
