5 years ago, during GE2011 rally, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan has admitted that his team had miscalculated the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) budget.
Speaking at the People's Action Party (PAP) rally in Clementi on Wednesday night, Dr Balakrishnan explained what happened to the YOG budget.
"We got the initial estimates of the money to be spent on the YOG wrong," Dr Balakrishnan frankly told the 1,000-strong crowd that gathered on the mud-soaked field in Clementi.
He explained that the games exceeded its original budget of S$104 million by over three times because it was the first time that such an event was organised and there was no other model for reference.
He revealed that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong then asked him if he would have bid for the YOG if he had known it would cost more than S$300 million.
To this, Dr Balakrishnan said that he would still do it, and had no regrets.
Recently, I attended a SEA Games 2015 Volunteers Briefing and had an ominous feeling that it will blow the budget out of the water. During the briefing, it was disclosed that the SEA Games athletes will be housed in hotels around the city area and this includes six star/ five star hotels.
When I did a quick check on GeBiz for SEA Games Tender, the signs are already there.
Some of them are in millions of awarded value.
1)Provision of Security Services to Sea Games Operational Centre, SSC HQ Office and Float @ Marina for a Period of One (1) Year with an Option to Renew for Another One (1) Year
Awarded Value around $800,000
2) Creation/ Marketing of Editorial Rich Media Content and Social Media
Awarded Value around $500,000
3) Appointment of Production House for Music Videos and Short Films for 28th SEA Games.
Awarded Value around $400,000
It has been rumoured that General Elections will be called after SEA Games 2015 for PAP to ride on the patriotic/ nostalgic feeling after 50th Singapore Anniversary and SEA Games 2015.
PAP will definitely make SEA Games 2015 a grand event for all Singaporeans.
Hopefully, Singapore voters will be brave and be united when snap elections are called next year.
