M'sian student who 'liked' posting under sedition probe -
NIBONG TEBAL - Penang police are investigating a 17-year-old student under the Sedition Act for "liking" a pro-Israel page, state police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Wira Abdul Rahim Hanafi said.
"He is now afraid to attend school and has lodged a police report after allegedly receiving threats from his friends and teachers," he said.
The Form Five student had apparently liked a page named "I Love Israel".
It was understood that a teacher of the school captured a screenshot of the teenager's post before posting it on her own account.
The teacher's post went viral and since then, teachers and students have threatened to shun the 17-year-old student.
South Seberang Prai OCPD Supt Shafien Mamat said the student claimed he had accidentally "liked" the page.
"He insisted that he did not 'like' the page and after getting threats from friends and teachers, he decided to lodge a police report on Monday," he said yesterday.
"Ths student has also deactivated his Facebook account," said Supt Shafien, who added that four people from the school had given their statements.
He said the case was being investigated under Section 4(1)(c) of the Sedition Act 1948, which provides for a maximum RM5,000(S$2,000) fine or up to five years' imprisonment or both.
