In Finland, every pregnant woman gets a special gift: the Maternity Box. It’s a collection of useful items for life with a newborn child. Even the box itself can be used as a crib! Today, in response to curiosity about the box, Reddit user GrumpyFinn (http://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/2ac569/i_know_reddit_has_been_interested_in_finlands/) posted photos of her opening her own Maternity Box. The results: awesome! This is such a great idea!
In Finland, every pregnant woman gets a free Maternity Box. This couple picked up theirs from the Post Office. Even their cat Simba was excited.

Each box comes with a brand new snow suit, hat, mittens, and a “warm body suit”.

It also includes a sleeping bag and sheet.

Also in the box: Hats, balaclava, pads, socks, and tights. The small bag has a little book, a toy, condoms, and some other small baby hygiene products.

There’s a cloth diaper, and a towel, but the rest is almost all clothing in various styles and forms, all gender-neutral. The bottom of the box is also a mattress, so the baby is able to use it as a bed at the beginning of her life.

This is such a great idea! There are so many challenges that come with being a new parent, and it’s cool to see Finland express its support for mothers in this way. Instead of just a cash handout, new mothers get this thoughtful collection of useful items. Go Finland!
