The number of babies born to teenagers last year was at a record low of only 487. This is the lowest number of babies born to girls 19 years and younger in the last 25 years.
In 2003, there were 731 babies born to girls 19 years and younger.

The lower trend is also not because fewer teenagers are having sex, in fact, more teens are sexually active now than in previous years.

The biggest difference now is the higher level of knowledge about contraception and safe sex. Another interesting point is that the number of court cases involving underage sex offences have also raised awareness that having sex with girls under 15 is illegal even if she consents.

More young boys are likely to use condoms because they are afraid of their parents finding out if they make a girl pregnant.

The Ministry of Health also explained that the number of abortions taken by young women (20 and under) also fell to only 578 last year. In 2003, the number was at a peak of 1483.

According to local social workers, the attitude of teenagers to sex is quite different from what it was before. They tend to be more casual about it and are having sex at younger ages.

There are more cases of children as young as 12 and 13 having sex while 10 years ago, it was more common for teenagers to first have sex when they were 15 or 16.

These days, young Singaporeans are seeing sex as a normal part of a relationship even if their relationships last only a few weeks to a few months.

Some of the contributing factors to the higher levels of knowledge about contraception include the willingness of teens to talk to each other about it, the sex education programs at school and the information available on the internet.

Teens who fall pregnant are quite likely to choose to get an abortion but of the girls that didn't get abortions, most of them admitted that they found out about their pregnancies or abortions too late to get an abortion. In Singapore, abortions can only be done in the first 24 weeks of pregnancy.

Other girls decided to let their babies live for religious reasons or they have the support of their families.
