SINGAPORE — The “overarching challenge” for Singapore is to find a common cause that brings people together to work for common interests, said Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam yesterday.

Speaking at the Appreciation and Appointment Ceremony for the new 6th Council for the South West Community Development Council (CDC), Mr Tharman said as more discrete interests, views and preferences emerge in society, Singapore has to continually make effort to find a common cause — which has always been the “Singapore agenda”.

“The natural forces of every society are to emphasise differences all the time — it happens all over the world,” said Mr Tharman, who is also Member of Parliament for Jurong GRC. “So, it means constant work, of finding common cause and bringing people together because deep inside, we have so much more in common as Singaporeans than we have that differentiates us.”

Other key priorities include ensuring every child, regardless of circumstances, has the best chance at doing well in life, enabling senior citizens to lead fulfilling and active lives, as well as making Singapore’s environment a “highly liveable” one, with greater importance placed on preserving our heritage, he said, adding that CDCs have an important “local role” to play.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the ceremony, newly-appointed South West district Mayor Low Yen Ling said she would be focusing on strengthening social services , developing local initiatives, championing environmental responsibilities, as well as promoting community health and volunteerism.

The revamped council will include three new Functional Committees (FC) — the Family and Active Ageing FC, the Social Service FC and the Volunteerism and Philanthropy FC — to address national challenges such as increasing social diversity and weakening of extended family ties.

One-hundred-and-five members were appointed to the South West CDC for three-year terms, where about one-third of them are new and will volunteer formally for the first time. About 85 per cent of the members are from the corporate sector, which Ms Low noted has been a result of the CDC’s efforts to invite corporate individuals to come on board. “Each and every one of them is a subject-matter expert in their sector and their area of interest and passion. We hope to harness on their networks, expertise and ideas to serve the needs of the residents in the South West district,” she said.

One of them is Mr Shawn Leo, managing director of Global Lamp Recyclers, who will be joining the Sustainable Environment FC. Mr Leo said he hopes to tap his expertise in recycling to encourage people in the CDC to recycle their recyclables instead of putting more waste into landfills.
