SINGAPORE — The Government has made steady progress in housing, transport, population issues and social safety nets in the past three years, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in Parliament today (May 28).
Housing, for instance, was a big concern for Singaporeans when the Twelfth Parliament opened. By building 52,000 flats and almost doubling subsidies disbursed to flats are more affordable, the situation is now under control, said Mr Lee as he gave props to National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan and his team.
In transport, “we can and will do better”, said Mr Lee. New trains are coming in and signalling equipment is being upgraded, with significant improvements to be expected from next year, he said. The Government will continue to subsidise public transport but commuters must be prepared to pay their share, he said.
On population issues, Mr Lee said there has been significant reduction of new arrivals. Foreign worker limits will not be eased and he appealed for businesses’ understanding.
The Government is reviewing its projects in the pipeline to manage foreign construction worker numbers. New flats and the train network will continue but about S$2 billion of projects such as the new Science Centre and new statutory board offices will be deferred. These tradeoffs are necessary, he said.
And in social policies, new ground has been broken through schemes such as the Wage Credit Scheme and Community Health Assist Scheme. More will be done in this area, such as through MediShield Life.
