Singaporeans are worried most about the unfair, preferential treatment of foreigners when it comes to the workplace.

Of the 475 complaints lodged with TAFEP (Tripartite Alliance for Fair and Progressive Employment Practices) last year, more than 50% of them were about employers favouring foreigners over Singaporeans.

While TAFEP did not give an exact breakdown of the complaints it received, it indicated that the complaints about discrimination were mostly about discrimination based on nationality (more than 50%) followed by complaints about age (20%) and language & race (13%).

The total number of complaints also increased 57% compared to 2012 and it seems that employers themselves are consulting more with TAFEP to find out what is acceptable to put in job advertisements.

Speaking broadly about discrimination in the workplace, acting minister for manpower, Tan Chuan-Jin, said that all employers need to make sure they have good employment practices.

He was speaking at the TAFEP Exemplary Employer Award Ceremony yesterday to over 300 business managers.

The ceremony recognised the good employment practices of various companies including those who hired disabled employees and gave extra perks to their workers.
