SINGAPORE: A research scientist in his 30s was among grassroots members spotted at a community event in Bukit Batok on Sunday.

Dr Ismail Muhamad Hanif was seen accompanying Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Lawrence Wong on his ministerial visit, hosted by Advisor to Jurong GRC Grassroots Organisations Halimah Yacob.

Mdm Halimah said Dr Ismail had previously been active in Tampines West and he has been helping out in her ward, Jurong GRC, for a few months.

Mdm Halimah said: "I met him at an event, and I said 'would you like to come and serve?', and he said 'yes'. So I said, 'come on, then' and that's when he came. I think it's good for him to get a flavour of Tampines West, and get a flavour of Jurong."

Recently, Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen had told the media that the potential candidates of the People's Action Party (PAP) for the next General Election are already active on the ground.

Dr Ng is the organising secretary of the PAP. - CNA/nd/ac
