An honorable member of the Coffee Shop Has Just Posted the Following:

In solidarity with those warned by the police that they need to apply for a permit for a 'public gathering' (even if, according to the Public Order Act, it is a gathering of ONE PERSON), I went to apply for a permit to do my own thing on Orchard Road.

I got rejected. T__T

**********

This was my application:

1) The purpose of the event

Of late, there have been various incidents, including the release of the White Paper on Population, which have made people forget about the PAP's track record and its valuable contributions to the country. It is time to remind Singaporeans that the current prosperity and peace that they enjoy should not be taken for granted. We are where we are now, a role model nation-state in the Southeast Asian region, precisely because of good governance from the PAP. We have to remember that the PAP's policies of meritocracy, multiracialism and incorruptibility are responsible for making Singapore what it is: Singapore. And what better venue than Orchard Road, the heart and soul of Singapore, to underline this message for Singaporeans?

2) Main organiser of the event

The main organiser of the event is myself.

3) Location of the event

The main location that I have identified for this cause-related solo public demonstration of what is essentially love for the ruling party is the space in front of Ngee Ann City, along the pedestrian boulevard.

4) Itinerary of the event

The event will consist of myself holding a placard during its duration.

5) Visuals of the backdrop/ banner/ poster

I will be holding a placard, measuring around 1 m to 1.5 m, bearing the words, "Be Grateful to the PAP". As the words will be painted on, I cannot accurately describe what font they will be in, but it is likely that they will be in one of the sans serif fonts, as serifs are quite difficult to render by hand. All the text will be in black, but the text for 'PAP' will be in blue and red. The two 'P's will be in blue, and the 'A' will be in red, which is quite a clever approximation of the party's own logo, without reproducing the party's logo itself, which would in all probability require written permission.

6) Expected turnout

The expected turnout will be based on the average pedestrian traffic during the event. In all likelihood, there will not be a 'turnout' in the sense that a crowd will gather around me, but mostly transient passers-by.

7) No. of participants

As I will be the only person holding the placard, then I believe the total number of participants is one. There is a possibility that some passers-by, recognising the aura of honour surrounding anyone who hoists said placard, might wish to ask for the opportunity to hold it for a while. I will refuse. If they so wish to stage their own expression of support, they will have to make their own placard and apply for a police permit by themselves. Singaporeans cannot be taught to cultivate ownership of important issues if they insist on borrowing other people's placards.

8) Any entertainment provided during the event

This is quite a serious event. There is nothing entertaining about the PAP.

9) Visuals of the poser/ banner to be displayed, if any

I am not sure of what is referred to here as 'poser'. Granted, some people might request that I 'pose' for photographs. I will gladly oblige, since this will allow my message to be later disseminated to those who did not have the opportunity to encounter me at Orchard Road. If by 'poser' you mean 'the person posing with the placard', then I can send you a recent photograph of myself. Please specify if you require a facial shot, waist shot or a full-body shot.

10) No. of licensed securities/ marshals deployed for event management and crowd control; and

As there are no foreseeable security concerns, then there is no need for security personnel present. I expect to be approached by some passers-by, offering praise and thanks for the timely reminder. The atmosphere will be friendly, convivial, and suffused with goodwill and gratitude.

11) Any Guest-of-Honour attending/ gracing the event.

There will not be any Guest-of-Honour attending/ gracing the event, though I wish to take this opportunity to repeat what an honour it is for me to carry the placard.

Yours sincerely,
Alfian Sa'at
