PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia and Singapore are planning to develop a Friendship Bridge that will strengthen and enhance the relationship between both countries.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said that the proposal of the bridge is a long term initiative between the republic and Malaysia.

He said: "It is a long term project between the two countries and this bridge will enhance the connectivity."

Najib said not only would the bridge serve as a new road connectivity between the republic, it would also be a symbol of growing friendship that Malaysia and Singapore is sharing.

However, more has yet to be discussed and among other factors that need to be looked at is the capacity of traffic, the processing time at the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex (CIQ).

Najib held the joint press conference with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong after a fruitful bilateral discussion that lasted for more than an hour.

It was also learnt that the new link was a way to address traffic and congestion issues on the causeway and it seeks to facilitate seamless travel between the two countries.

Najib also thanked Lee for Singapore's effort in providing assistance in the search and rescue mission for MH370 as the republic was one of the first countries in the region that provided prompt aid.

"Both leaders have also agreed to explore ways for both sides to work more closely with fellow Asean member states in search and rescue operations in line with the Asean Political-Security Community Blueprint," he added earlier today.

Lee, who was accompanied by his wife, Ho Ching, ministers as well as senior officials on the visit that started yesterday.

The 5th Malaysia-Singapore Leaders Retreat, held here, is a platform for both leaders to take stock of bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

The retreat is held alternately by both Malaysia and Singapore and it provides the leaders with an avenue to explore and discuss new initiatives and further collaborations which can strengthen the warm bilateral ties shared between Malaysia and Singapore.

Their last meeting took place in February last year in Singapore, which saw the leaders agree on a high-speed rail link between the republic and Kuala Lumpur.

The high-speed rail would significantly cut travel time between both countries to just 90 minutes.
