The head of the biggest film organisation on the mainland has stepped down, with one media organisation alleging that weeks earlier he was questioned as part of a corruption investigation into an ally of the former security czar Zhou Yongkang.

Han Sanping relinquished his role as chairman of the state-run China Film Group Corporation in a management reshuffle and he was involved in January in an inquiry into the former deputy public security minister Li Dongsheng, the financial news service Caixin reported.

Li had previously served as deputy propaganda minster. He was a close ally of Zhou, formerly one of China’s top leaders, who is also under investigation for alleged graft.

The report did not allege any wrongdoing by Han.

It said he returned to work after the inquiry in January, citing an unnamed source.

Han told China National Radio on Tuesday he had stepped down as he had reached retirement age.

Caixin said executives at the state-run film production and distribution company normally retire at 63, although the official age limit was 60.

Li was removed from office as deputy public security minister in February. He had been placed under investigation in December for alleged corruption.

Han will hand over his duties as chairman to Jiao Hongfen, a former vice chairman of the film corporation, according to the Caixin report.

Han became vice chairman of the group in 1999 and chairman in 2007 and has overseen the growth of the mainland film industry from a small regional market with tiny box office takings to the globe’s second-biggest film market.

He has also directed films including the mainland historical epics The Founding of a Republic and Beginning of the Great Revival.

The Chinese box office rose by about one-third in 2012 to US$2.7 billion, overtaking Japan as the second-largest global market, according to statistics from the Motion Picture Association of America.
