An honorable member of the Coffee Shop Has Just Posted the Following:
Quite a number of Singaporeans feel strongly that National Service should be abolished and Singapore should rely on a professional army.
I can understand their strong views. There are strong arguments to move to a professional army.
However, I urge these people to support the Petition to reduce full time NS to one year and to shorten the period of reservist training.
This is the first step that can be taken. It will reduce the burden for our NS men, and still recognize the need to keep our defense capability at a high level.
To abolish NS completely is likely to cause uncertainty on our defense capability and should only be considered as a second step a few years down the road.
I like to ask all Singaporeans to support this Petition to reduce NS, for the future of our country and the welfare of our NS men.
