Chinese police in Shaanxi Province discovered that 22 tons of pork was sold as certified halal beef.

This news has infuriated many Muslims in the region who bought the meat believing it was halal. Islam forbids Muslims from eating pork and other non-halal food.

The World Bulletin stated that the factory sold between up to 2,000 kg to local markets, or roughly two tons before the scam was detected. It is unknown if any of this pork left local markets with the Halal label.

China has been attempting to establish its presence in the global Halal market. Xi’an is the home of Halal Stock and Leap Fortune, both major producers in the Halal related industries. In May of this year, the Chinese government sponsored a Halal Food Fair It is not known if any of the fake Halal pork made its way into the exhibition in the neighboring province or these companies. China’s exports of Halal foods is a small percentage of the global Halal trade. China’s Halal certifications are recognized by Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Qatar. If any exported pork under the guise of Halal beef left the country for export, it is likely it would have been isolated to those countries.

Halal beef commands a price premium over pork in local markets. Therefore, there is an economic incentive for farmers to attempt to pass off pork as Halal beef. A police statement revealed that the factory processed the pork at night and sold it as beef the next day. Camouflage methods used to pull off the ruse include paraffin wax and industrial salts to alter the color and appearance of the meat.

Scandals like this are not at all uncommon in China. Earlier this year the Medical Daily said that 904 people were arrested for “meat-related offences”. Urban dwellers are less likely to be familiar with the source of the food and easier to fool that rural residents of China.

Most of the sales were in Xi’an, once the capital of China, is in the heart of Shaanxi. This province of the People’s Republic of China is in the the Northwest China region. It is regarded as the cradle of Chinese civilization. It is at the end of the Northern Silk Road. Xi’an is where Islam was first introduced in China during the Tang dynasty. With seven mosques and 50,000 followers, Xi’an has a substantial Muslim population relative to other places in China.
