So, cancer rates going up, and than all of a sudden, free cancer screening offered to those turning 50 this year. What's going on? This cheapskate govt. actually offering free cancer screening? I am overwhelmed by their generousity. What about screening for those that have already turned 50? Now they are saying eating too much causes cancer? Seriously? They blame it on smoking too. Why not blame the haze and forest fires for lung cancer? It can't be good to breath it in all the time. What about the chlorine in the water and the sai chwee we have to drink? Easy to say cancer rates going up, without finding out why.

Singaporeans who are 50 this year to get free screening for 3 cancers at polyclinics

All Singaporeans who turn 50 years old this year can get free cancer screening at polyclinics for colon, breast and cervical cancer.

Announced by Health Minister Gan Kim Yong on Tuesday, the screening will be paid for by government subsidy and supplemented by the Singapore Cancer Society (SCS).

Colon and breast are the top cancers for men and women respectively.

Speaking on World Cancer Day, Mr Gan said: "For these cancers, there is good evidence that early detection through screening saves lives, because cancer, when detected and treated in the early stages, has better outcome."

Cancer cases on the rise in Singapore

Worrying trend of more lifestyle cancers like prostate, breast tumours

Cancer is on the rise in Singapore - especially those linked to bad habits associated with the modern lifestyle, including smoking and eating too much.

According to the latest available figures from two years ago, 12,123 people were diagnosed with cancer, up from 10,576 in 2008. This marks an increase of nearly 15 per cent.

One reason for these numbers, said National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) director Soo Khee Chee, is an ageing population. The NCCS is Singapore's leading cancer treatment and research centre.

"In developed countries like ours, people are living longer. Previously, people would die before they got cancer," he said.
