P. Thangamalar, 34, had been dating her neighbour Raja, 38, after the death of her husband last year.
Tamil Nesan reported that Raja saw Thangamalar chatting with another man named Gajendran at a market in Wanarapettai, about 20km from Chennai on Friday.
He confronted her later that evening. Apparently, they had often been fighting over this as Raja was upset that Thangamalar was getting close to Gajendran.
During the fight, Thangamalar told Raja to mind his own business as he was not her husband.
Suddenly, Raja splashed kerosene over her and set her on fire. He attempted to run away but the woman caught and held him firmly.
Hearing their screams, the neighbours rushed in and sent them to the Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital where Thangamalar died later in the night.
Prior to her death, she told police that her lover had set her on fire and she had caught hold of him because she was scared.
Raja died the next morning.

The villagers had assumed that they were thieves. So they tied up the men and attacked them.
Police, who rushed to the area and rescued the men, said the villagers had been suspicious of strangers in the area as there had been three burglary cases in their area in the past two months.
