Whenever they are asked to do more for the poor, phrases like welfarism is bad, we cannot be socialistic, market forces must be allowed to prevail. So no free single payer universal medical care, no jobless benefits, no state financed pension scheme, no minimum wage,. Welfare state is bad, socialism is worse. The pple should be self reliant they should be subject to global competition by import labor. This is for their own good to stand on their own feet to compete ...capitalism is great....only for the ordinary citizens.

There is a class of Singaporeans who:

1. Still get free medical services and annual checkups. Sometimes they pay $8 for heart surgery.

2. Enjoy state funded pensions.

3. Many had enjoyed free overseas education funded by the state.

4. Job security in a network of companies where they are parachuted from one high paying job to another regardless of relevant experience.

5. Because they consider themselves the best of the lot, they exempt themselves from competition by creating unlevel playing field, good ability to eject their opponents using legal and the media they control.

6. There seems to be abundant forgiveness for their mistakes like overruning budgets of sporting events, under planning the infrastructure, ..as the populace is subject to the hire fire harshness of capitalism.

Well we all know there is always inequality in a society but rarely or never so large as S'pore's among developed countries. Part of fairness is to apply the same principles to everyone. It really becomes too hard to stomach when some enjoys the Swedish style welfare while the rest are told to fend for themselves....the double standards and hypocrisy just runs so deep...
