kissing Fish: christianity for people who don't like christianity
The story of the Incarnation of God into the reality of a poor, peasant family forced into traveling due to an Imperial Decree is much better understood by those who can relate personally to that reality.

Martyred Salvadoran Archbishop Oscar Romero shared this sentiment when he said in one of his last Christmases that, “no one can celebrate a genuine Christmas without being truly poor. The self sufficient, the proud, those who, because they have everything, look down on others, those who have no need even of God, for them there will be no Christmas. Only the poor, the hungry, those who need someone to come on their behalf, will have that someone. That someone is God. Emmanuel. God-with-us.”
.......
overstated? or spot on? Most of us are not poor by Salvadoran standards. But many of us are broken, hurting, and needy in our own way. We don't revel in our poverty, our struggles, or our angst, but, because of them, may we celebrate a Christmas that is sufficiently genuine. - Roger
