2013 Ironman World Championship Triathlon in Hawaii
Fiery star chef Gordon Ramsay intends to have the word “Ironman” tattooed on his body when he next arrives in Las Vegas. He wants the artwork to be a permanent reminder of his successful completion of Saturday’s Ironman World Championship Triathlon in Hawaii, a 2.4-mile ocean swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile marathon in the hot sun on a windy course on the Big Island.
Gordon was one of 1,900 athletes who were selected from the 80,000 applications to compete in what’s described as “one of sport's most hellish endurance events.” He had never qualified for it before.
His official time was 14:04:48. Despite a slow speed of 20 minutes per mile in the marathon, he cracked the 112-mile bike segment in just six hours, 35 minutes and the 2.4-mile swim in one hour, 20 minutes. Competitors dropped out, and many finished by midnight after starting at 7 a.m.
