On ChannelNewsAsia today (19 Aug), guests and MPs at National Day Rally 2013 reportedly welcomed the various policies announced by PM Lee last evening (‘Guests, MPs welcome new policies announced at National Day Rally (http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/guests-mps-welcome-new/781616.html)‘).
Nominated MP Tan Su Shan was quoted thus, “What I took comfort in was that while we dwell on the short-term issues, we did not ignore the long-term issues.”
“The long-term issues to me are issues of fiscal prudence, issues of the fact that we were going to have an aging population and that we need to invest in infrastructure.”
Professor Kishore Mahbubhani, Dean of the LKY School of Public Policy, said, “First part of the speech, where he tried to explain very carefully that ‘yes, the government will do more for you.’ But let’s be honest with ourselves, it is also going to cost us a bit more and we are going to find a way to pay for it.”
“That nuanced message is very important for Singaporeans because it shows that we are not going down the populist route of saying you can get ‘everything free of charge’. And that is a very important message he conveyed.”
Who is Tan Su Shan?
Ms Tan Su Shan joined DBS in July 2010 as Managing Director and Group Head of Wealth Management. She was promoted to Group Head of Consumer Banking & Wealth Management in April 2013.
Prior to joining DBS, she was Morgan Stanley’s Head of Private Wealth Management for South-east Asia. Before re-joining Morgan Stanley in May 2008, she was a Region Head for Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei for Citi Private Bank. Prior to that, she was an Executive Director with Morgan Stanley in Singapore, serving from 1997 to 2005 as an investment advisor to high net worth families, corporations and institutions in the region.
Ms Tan is currently a Nominated MP. She was the founder and past president of the Financial Women’s Association in Singapore, and a board member of Aetos Security Management, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Temasek Holdings. She sits on the investment committee of Ministry of Health Holdings. In addition, Su Shan is a member of the Monetary Authority of Singapore Private Banking Advisory Group.
She sits on the board of Singapore’s KK Hospital Health Endowment Fund. She was a past board member of the National Museum and a member of the International Women’s Foundation and the Young Presidents Organisation. On the education front, she is an advisor to Raffles Girls Primary School and the SJI International School.

Kishore Mahbubani is currently Professor in the Practice of Public Policy and Dean of the LKY School of Public Policy at NUS.
From 1971 to 2004, he served in the Singapore foreign services, ending up as Singapore’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations. He was Permanent Secretary at the Foreign Ministry from 1993 to 1998.
He continues to serve in Boards and Councils of several institutions in Singapore, Europe and North America, including the Yale President’s Council on International Activities (PCIA), Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs, Indian Prime Minister’s Global Advisory Council, University of Bocconi International Advisory Committee, World Economic Forum – Global Agenda Council on China and Chairman of the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize Nominating Committee.
He was awarded the President’s Scholarship in 1967. He graduated with a First Class honours degree in Philosophy from the University of Singapore in 1971. He was conferred The Public Administration Medal (Gold) by the Singapore Government in 1998.
