SINGAPORE: The five St Margaret's Secondary School girls who shaved their heads in support of the Hair for Hope campaign will not have to wear wigs, said Education Minister Heng Swee Keat on Wednesday.

The minister, in a Facebook post, said that he had spoken to the school's principal, Mrs Marion Tan, about the matter.

He also said that it was reasonable to ask if and how exceptions can be made under special circumstances, adding that Mrs Tan, on her part, has also reflected on her decision.

She understood that the girls wanted to show empathy and solidarity with cancer patients by going bald, said the minister. Mrs Tan now supports all five in their wish not to conceal their shaved heads, he added.

Mr Heng said he is also glad that the principal, teachers and students of the school have resolved this and will move on.

The school had previously made the five girls promise to wear wigs as a condition for their participation in the campaign.

The five complied but two subsequently said they developed rashes from wearing wigs.

I support Heng Swee Kiat in this matter, although he is from the lui-kong darkside
