Dear Bros!
Having seen the current change of "taste" in the Shanghai Recommendation thread... I have decided to start a standalone Shanghai thread for bros who wants to just express themselves for the benefit of others.. or just find an avenue to vent pented frustrations and perhaps anger without being flamed to oblivion by those thoughtless and immature...

Post anything you want.. FRs you may choose to post in the long standing Shanghai Recommendation thread for the benefit of those who are craving for it...

However....do not FLAME... just remember that you may thing what you're doing is right ... but that's just YOUR point of view.. others may not think so.. and Vice Versa... WHAT GOES AROUND WILL DEFINITELY COME AROUND...

Happy postings!!

THREAD HAS ENDED.... Since none of the bros seemed interested... THANKS AND GOODBYE!

Here's the first FR for this thread...

I was at Super Brand Mall at Pudong Lujiazhui and I tried the food at Orchard Place (Wujie Fang). Not too bad. I had ice kachang, teochew fishball soup (tasted like my grandma's but a little too spongy) and nasi lemak (minus the sambal chilli). The ice kachang is the closest I could find as compared to Singapore's but minus the attap seed at only RMB8 (as compared to Big Bite's RMB12). There were 2 more Singaporeans when I was there and I asked one of them if the laksa was nice and he said not too bad. Perhaps I would return there another day to try the rest of the menu.

Ice Kachang (Highly Recommended)
Looks: 8/10
Taste: 8/10
Damage: RMB8
RTF: Yes!

Nasi Lemak
Looks: 6/10
Taste: 7/10 (strong coconut milk flavour)
Damage: RMB18
RTF: No!

Teochew Fishball Soup
Looks: 8/10
Taste: 7/10
Danage: RMB12
RTF: Maybe...

Thanks a lot. I don't have a sweet tooth but my British boss does. He'll love this.

Went to the latest Crossroads at Tong Ren Road. Tried the chai tao kueh (request for half black half white), ngoh hiong and char kway teow. The chai tao kueh is better than the one at Gubei Carrefour's Big Bite while the ngoh hiong is not too bad. Forget about the char kway teow. Although it is better than Frankie's Penang char kway teow, nothing beats the char kway teow served at Queesntown (with so many si hum), Zion Rd and Hong Lim (formerly at Outram)...

Fried Carrot Cake (Highly Recommended)
Looks: 9/10
Taste: 9/10
Damage: (forgotten)
RTF: YES!

Hokkien Ngoh Hiong
Looks: 7/10
Taste: 7/10
Damage: (forgotten)
RTF: Maybe

Char Kway Teow
Looks: 6/10
Taste: 4/10
Damage: (forgotten)
RTF: NO!

By the way, if you are eating at this Crossroads, do ask to speak to the boss and he'll give you a 20% discount if you tell him you're a fellow Singaporean too!

Haha... bro, been there and the one at super brand mall... Well, for me, it's only when I'm really desperate for singaporean food, and too lazy to travel, do I go to the one at super brand mall.... There's also a hainanese chicken rice where xiangyang market is, and they serve singapore desserts too... I like this shop cause they serve roast chicken... and I usually end up asking for lots and lots of chilli...

Address: Xiang Yang Road (in between Nan Chang Road and Huai Hai Road)
Hainanese Chicken Rice

Can't remember the prices for the food there, but it's still ok lah...

Dear bros,

I would like to add to the chai tao kueh of Crossroads, as i like to eat chai tao kueh a lot back in spore thus, it does helps me satisfy my craving palate of soft, tender, sweet, spicy, egg-filled chai tao kueh.

I think the cost of each serving is 22rmb if i remember correctly.
There are a couple of Crossroads i came across before:-

1) at Nanjing Xi lu and Changde lu. There is a merlion statue in front. It serves as a pub too at nite with a pool table.

2) at Huashan lu I think where the Old Manhattan pubs is. Its called Crossroads pub, not sure is it selling singapore food as never try there before.

3) at Parkson 4th or 5th floor of Shaanxi Nanlu and Huaihai lu. Always go to this cafe as its the closest to me. Big couches to lie back and have a beer. Huge wall poster of singapore scenery.

4) at Gubei Carrefour. Basement where the food court is. Not very big and sometimes no chai tao kueh  . Also this place looks like a spin off as the menu is quite different from the rest. Some of the food are not available.

5) at Raffles City. Lai fuo shi guang chang. Top floor where the food court is, right at the end of the food court. Very small place with limited seatings. But the chai tao kueh here taste nicer than other branches.

Thats about all the Crossroads I came across before.

And also not to mention my favourite drink KOPI-O!!!...As I'm a heavy drinker of kopi-o. Here I can only get Nescafe DIY kopi-o, never like those starbucks or coffee bean coffee. i find it a rip off.

Although its not 60cents like back home, its 12rmb here for big cup, 10rmb for small cup. So naturally always go for the big cup which they serve in those glass cups you find in every kopitiam in singapore, those transparent with squares like glass blocks.. ....thats the closest i can get to a taste of singapore kopi-o although the coffee powder maybe from malaysia.

I reckon some of the shops are franchises, so dunno where the actual spore boss would be. So can I just inform the manager I'm a singaporean too?? :p Just trying my luck...for the 20% discount.

BTW- to all bros out there, I do have a list of all most of the restaurants here in shanghai. Quite detail, listing from what type of food (eg. Sichuan, beijing chai, chaozhou chai, shanghai chai, ningbo chai....to western food and xinjiang chai too)...with address and number to call for reservation and so on. Pls PM me ur email address if you wan the list.

Bro shengge can i have ur list of bus routes, Mrt and shopping list? U got my email add rite??

thanks and cheers

Hi Bros,

Me have not been to Shanghai since 2001, guess must have changed tremendously.

Juz would like to chk with bros that r in shanghai, currently, any place that is selling Yong Tau Foo (Liang Tou Fu) there? If I'm not wrong the foodcourt at the Raffles City should be operated by our Kopitiam rite? So they should have Yong Tau Foo stall there? Any other place got?

Tks for the info!

Bro, the crossroads at nanjing lu/changde lu is gone, but there's one nearby at kerry center, on tongren lu.

Anyway, if you're craving for the type of coffee we get back at home, it is being sold in pines supermarket, the "singaporean" supermarket found behind jinqiao carrefour, and the other one in puxi, gubei carrefour if I don't remember wrongly.... SGPShanghai69 will be able to give you the right directions. I bought my coffee there, and they have the penang white coffee... basically, it's all the aik cheong brand... but trust me, it's the best coffee you can find here in china... Haha

I can't really remember if there is Yong Tau Foo... But then again, the food there taste nothing close to what we have back in singapore. Tried their fishball noodles, and bak chor mee.... you would stop eating after your first taste of it... Sadly, raw materials are different from those back at home, so taste is definitely compromised.

Well, for the pines behind jinqiao carrefour, you need to go all the way to the end, there's another mall of sorts behind jinqiao carrefour... you would know when you find it, there's a tony G restaurant at the front... walk further into the mall, about 100m or less, and you'll find pines supermarket....

For the time being, I'm going to new asia snack for their 担担面 whenever I need a fix for bak chor mee... It's not fantastic, but at least it's slightly spicy, and it tastes good enough for me... Haha... :D

Hi Bro Nongho,
The Pines supermarket is not in the same building as the Carrefour supermarket( Jin Qiao). It is in the sport and leisure centre next to it. You should see a Tony' restaurant and a Starbuck's Coffee place at the entrance. Things are pretty exp. as it is meant for expats. You can get almost anything Singaporean , even Yu Sheng during CNY but be prepared to pay for it. :D

Dear brothers of Shanghai...

Glad to see things picking up in this thread... keep them coming!!

I apologize to brothers in the Shanghai Recommendation thread if you feel that I have somewhat diluted the main thread. However, from the type of postings currently in this thread, I think perhaps this thread serves as a purifier.. filtering out the non-juicy postings that some brothers have come to dislike and criticise.

Just to add to this thread...

For all Star Wars fan currently in Shanghai, the show is being shown in most cinemas right now! I watched it in UME (Xintianti) recently and I would say the feel of the cinema is pretty much like our GVs in Singapore. Only difference is the price.. it cost Rmb70 per ticket.. way too expensive but being a die-hard Star Wars fan, nothing beats catching it on BIG SCREEN. The sound system is decent and the crowd is limited. :D Which is a plus.. more space, less disturbance.. and amazed that I am... no handphone rings during the entire duration of the movie... apart from mine.. but it was in silent mode, being the "considerate Singaporean" that I am.. hahahaha

Also, I am glad to see that Coffee Bean & Tea Leaves has finally arrived in Shanghai. For guys who are tired of seeing Starbucks around every major corner, Coffee Bean's comprehensive menu will be a pleasant and welcome change...The first one I found was behind Raffles City. And my latest discovery was the one in Xintianti... maybe it's old news to most bros here but being one who rarely get the opportunity to explore new places... well... I'm utter delighted with this find...

This is the perfect season to visit Coffee Bean, not too hot yet... and definitely not too cold... Just buy a drink and a biscotti if you like, read a book and listen to music... if you're not much of a reader, you can just sip your drink and watch the world pass you by at an idly pace.. and may I say.. what a BEAUTIFUL world it is... all the pretty ladies (although most of them will have foreigners on tow but what the heck...) passing through the main street of Xintianti... DELICIOUS... Yummy...

Hmmm.... to each his own... for me, weekdays are already stressful enough so I tend to choose more relaxing activities during whatever limited weekends I have...

Anyway, keep the informative postings coming! And heartfelt thanks to all the brothers who has shown their support to this thread...

Thanx Bro WhamBamTYM and shanghian for the direction to the supermarket...will check it out...

Like to relate my experience of watching Star Wars here.

Luckily I caught the premiere back home in Singapore when it open world wide on May 19th. As I was not back in shanghai yet at that time.

Came beck here, my collegues happen to have 2 free tickets to a cinema 国际电影院 International cinema. Can watch any movie any time and valid for 1 year. So I thot ok good I can go watch Star Wars again.

Cinema located at Haining lu. Went there on the 1st of June watching the 7.50pm show. The place looks a bit run down. Like the old Capitol cinema.
Thot to myself nevermind free tickets mah...
After getting tickets went in to the cinema, wah kao...the seats like all at the same level, wooden with a bit of cushioning. Then the usher say can sit where I like even though there are seat numbers on the tickets. But I seated myself back at the place allocated on my ticket. Beside me was 2 aunties chit-chatting, the other side was a father and son, behind me was another kid with family.
Ok nevermind just want to enjoy the movie. Then the lights dim and the movie started. I almost fainted!!...The bloody movie was dubbed in Mandarin!!!!

Obiwan : "AN-Na Jin, ni bu neng zhe me zuo..."
Anakin : "xin de sifu, mei wen ti de..."

I was cursing and swearing liao, make matters worst, the 2 aunties besides me keep chatting and talking not watching the movie at all. They would better off be in some cafe gossiping. The kid besides me was eating popcorn and the dad keep asking what he wans to eat. "wan a melon?""wan a sweet?"
and the dad was like explaining to the kid see the flying cars, how the world next time is gonna be...blah blah....then the kid behind me was standing up n pushing against my chair and asking the mother what is happening, why this like that, why that like that....then i realised that day happens to be children's day too thats why they are watching the movie as well.
I was with my collegue if not i would have walk out of the cinema liao.

Anyway, its a bad experience for me. I thot International cinema would be at least a bit grand. Moreover they are also participating in the current Shanghai Film Festival.

Sorry to bros out there to read my frustration...

Bro, I know exactly what you mean... Star wars is available in both english and mandarin... I haven't watched it yet, and if I were to watch it here in shanghai, I will be spending something like 90RMB per ticket. I won't mind, cause at least it's in english, and somewhat, there's lesser likelihood of having families like that watching with me. I'm not running them down or anything, but somehow, you know what I mean....

Come to think of it, not easy to find porn also.

I think the cost of each serving is 22rmb if i remember correctly.
There are a couple of Crossroads i came across before:-

1) at Nanjing Xi lu and Changde lu. There is a merlion statue in front. It serves as a pub too at nite with a pool table.

$200 sing dollar for three bottle of cheavis, plus unlitmited green tea through out the night! Of cause fruits and room inclu. The first time i went ask taxi diver bring me ktv kana chop, a few times also paying more than wat singapore is paying, thinking cannot be one wat, shang hai cheong more expensive than sing?

Also found out tat the gers there seldom drink hard liqulor, so when the bill is cheap the gers there all made them drank, not spenting much time there so cannot sian, some gers no ta bao one,but when they drank we ta bao them. Learn a lot wif my friends there, if next time i go hope all bros here can also guide me along, just hope tat my bits of sharing here all senior bros here do not mind :)

Hey Bro Nongho,
Don't worry about venting your frustrations... it is what this thread is for... :) We're here to share the ups and downs... I'm sure bros participating in this thread will understand..

On the Chinese dubbing issue... just to let bros know...
The current trend is to get HDDVD (High Density DVD) as it is more cost effective. One disc can accommodate a few full length movies.. recently I bought a 3-disc set (Lord of the Rings, Matrix, Internal Affairs... each full series per disc! Amazing) and I glad that they're all dubbed in English... because for those who have bought this type of disc before, they will know that one cannot change subtitle or language.. so if you get a version dubbed in the wrong language.... TOO BAD! hahahaha....

So to bros, buying HDDVD, please check in advance...

Just my little contribution to the thread...

Brothers who are in need of a bad fix of good, and I mean good, chicken (or any other meat) curry, look no further.

I bought a few packets of curry premix from a small restaurant on the ground floor of Simei shopping ctr, next to the Simei MRT. The brand is Remparatus. Just add meat, it's that easy. Add a little milk when cooked to thicken the curry.

Or you can buy from their Defu Lane factory:
23 Defu Lane 10,
1-236 Defu Industrial Estate
Tel : 62828680
They take orders from their website as well and I think they deliver if orders is over $50. http://asiaspices.com

The curry is spicy and taste and smell of real curry, not the other usual stuff you find in the supermarket.

My opinion, this is way better than Crossroads and I'm fussy about my curry.

Incidentally they have lots of other stuff as well. I love their buah keluak mix, it's really something a nonya dare not to critise too much. Belachan sambal, the lot.

I don't work for them, just a satisfied customer.

Bro Shanghaitan,

Thanks for understanding and the encouragement.

The HDDVD are you referring to those "压缩" format like they have a whole drama series of 40 episodes squeeze into 3 discs or a few movies squeeze into 1 disc etc....
Yah I agree its value for money, but the shopowner told me before those discs used are of bad quality and may get easily scratch or spoil after watching once or a couple of times. Actually its ok as some movies you only watch it once.
Anyway I mostly buy my dvds on pudong side although I stay on the puxi side. Opposite the Yaohan "八百半" there as a stretch of shops of about 6-8 dvd stores. I normally get my dvds there as one of the auntie there already recognize me and i'm always able to get a good bargain from her. And she won't recommend any bad quality dvds to me like those with human heads for the latest movies. Normally I would go in and pick all the dvds I wanted then pass to her and she would either exchange or pick out those that are of bad quality. I can call her to help me reserve DVDs. Besides all this services, I find her dvds selling quite cheap too for 6rmb sometimes 5.50rmb to me which I can't find in puxi side which are selling at 7-8rmb and also able to test the disc before buying. But after being a regular for sometime I trusted her so seldom test now and so far I do not have any complains. :)

Hi Bro Nongho,
I'm not too sure about the quality of the disc and it's lifespan though you're right to say that most of the disc we'll only watch once or twice. So it does not really matter if the disc quality is poor.

For classics that I really really want to keep, I'll get the originals.. hahahaha... but even originals get worn out eventually... just a matter of time..

I agree with you that DVDs are more expensive in Puxi to a certain extent. Just like you mentioned, you're a regular at the DVD shop that you frequent and that counts a lot. I'm able to get DVDs at your price over in Puxi as I visit him regularly.. although he's a street seller, I can go to him home to check out the quality if my time permits, otherwise, I can watch and return if I'm not satisfied with it. :D It pays to be a regular.. just like if you visit a HC or even KTV, calling the same girl most of the time will only get you better service. Like what you have posted in the Shanghai Recommendation thread, your HC will let you do twice without the extra charges... right? It takes time... and money... well.. for most things anyway... hahhahaha... Brothers in Pudong should stick to buying such "necessities" near where they stay.. likewise for Brothers staying in Puxi..

Anyway, enjoyed reading all your postings... keep them coming!

Dear Bros Shanghaitan and nongho,
I do not have to worry about the quality, price and lifespan, as I downloaded them from the website, all free. Previously, this site has some rated movies, since the crack down, boh liao!
So basically, I just leave my pc on in the morning and can watch when I get home. When I get back home, I will give you the website address.

14-06-2005, 08:48 AM
Hahahaha.... Lobangs aplenty in this thread....

Bro Shengge's Rmb 0 downloads versus Bro Kelvin's Rmb 5 and possibly lower 七浦路.... step right up! step right up! There's something for each and every one! Step right up!! du du dudu du du du dududu dududu.....

Actually.... to each his own when it comes to this matter... unless one has a television linked to the comp, one will have to make do with watching the downloaded movies on a computer monitor... a not-too-expensive DVD Player/TV combo will probably be a better choice in this case.. however, for more mobile bros who likes watching movies on the go, it will be a better idea to download them and watch at their convenience... not to mention it will also extend the lifespan of the oft breakdown laptop DVD player....

So... perhaps a mixture of purchase and downloads would be a better way to go... download for outstation assignments... purchase of home-base entertainment.. right? It's all about balance.... hahahaha

Happy "shopping" guys and gals (if any... how I wish I can meet like-minded women in this forum... )!

Bro Shanghaitan,

Well said!!...it does pays to be a regular. Regular has it privileges.

Not sure whether the HC allows the girl to do it twice. But I reckon its up to the girl. She's providing a service and as long as you are happy and satisfy with it, I'm sure you will keep asking for her service. And that way she earns and also be able to remain in the HC. As I understand from my girl if up to 2 months you do not have any customers asking for your service, you will be ask to pack your bags and go home. There is like a point system in the HC, if you keep getting ask for by customers, your points will add up and you have additonal bonus at the end of the year. If you do not have repeat customers, they will say bye bye to you. So I reckon the girls are also ensuring they have repeat customers in order to earn a living.

Bro shengge,

Thanx for the website. But it will take sometime for the whole movie to download rite?....anyway I'm a poor chap, no PC or laptop at home...so only way is to buy DVDs lor.....

Great info Bro Nongho!
It helps to know how to navigate the streets of Shanghai... advise to newcomers to Shanghai.. unlike places like Beijing, it is not enough to just name the landmark that you want to go to unless it is something VERY prominent...

In Shanghai, you'll need to give taxi drivers 2 road names at least... the intersections are what they will know... and don't be surprise if some Pudong taxi drivers are not familiar with even famous places like Xiang Yang Market for example... I've personally met some before... and the same applies for Puxi drivers... some have no clue as to how to drive around in Pudong, apart from the airport that is...

It is strange, but having road maps on you will be a great help...

Hi walkingdick,

I always get my DVDs on the pudong side across the river although I reside on the puxi side.

Unless you go to a big shop then the dvds will be priced as what you are purchasing. I found on the puxi side mostly are street vendors with their suitcase, bicycle or push cart with their merchandise stack up which you can get for 6-8 RMB. I find that difficult to browse with the limited space and the selection doesn't holds much. Its ok if you know the vendor as a regular in the location if not the vendor may dissappear for days or you can't exchange a faulty dvd.

As for new movies, most of them are taken from the cinema or the quality is quite bad. Normally its best to wait out a couple of months. Thats why its good to be a regular customer to a vendor so he/she can advise you which are the better dvds to buy.

I was just at my regular dvd shop last nite. I picked out the movie Mr. & Mrs Smith by Brad pitt and Angelina Jolie. The shopowner seeing that I picked the movie, took the movie from me and put it back on the shelf saying its bad quality. If I'm not a regular she wouldn't do that to me and lose a business transaction. But I do find the shop owner services quite good as it does not just applies to me. There was a couple of Indian fellows too looking for DVDs and one ask for Batman the beginning which is the latest movie I guess. The shopowner asked me to help do the interpretation asking the Indian fellow what he wants. I relayed the message to the shopowner saying he wants "Bian Fu Xia". The owner immediately reply that the DVDs came in that day but it was of bad quality and shot in the cinema so she stashed away the DVDs and not selling it probably returning it to the suppliers.

I find that very thoughtful of the owner to insist on better quality DVDs for her customers which in turn will return more often and introducing more customers to her. Well at least she have my support as I'm willing to travel from puxi side to pudong just to buy DVDs...hahahahahaha :D

Hi Frankieman12,

No worries...glad the map can be of some help.

I'm not sure whether you can find a map with pinyin like the Singapore street directory. But I'm sure there is. Have you tried out FuZhou lu? Its a stretch of road with bookstores, stationery supplies. A lot of bookshops can be foud along the stretch of road. Something like Bras basah in singapore stretch out.

Fu Zhou Lu is located just beside Raffles City. If you come out of the entrance, its on the left side of Raffles City where the taxi stand is. Proceed walking down you will see Coffee Bean. Just keep walking along that road and you will come across many bookshops.
The biggest bookshop I think is called "Shangcheng Shu Ju" Book City or City bookshop. Its a stand alone building about 8 storey high. That whole building is full of books!

Normally I carry with me a tourist map which you can get it free from hotel or airport or a "Jiaotong" Traffic Map which can be bought at newsvendor for 5RMB. That map is useful enough to travel on major roads or when I'm outside and I'm lost. Then act like a tourist, whipped out the map and ask any chio bu that happen to pass by!!! :D

Hi walkingdick,

No no....please..I've been here less than a year. The policies here are quite confusing and a lot of paperwork to be done. I have to go through the process myself and hence needs to be aware of what is happening. There are much more policies out there which I do not know of or don't understand at all.
As for the job market situation, I guess everywhere is the same. Depends on what field of industry you are in. Everyone knows China is booming now. SH is just like spore back in the 80s booming period. With so many MNCs and foreign companies setting up shop here, I'm sure there is something for everyone. You just need to be there to grab the opportunity. Singapore is too saturated for me.

Dear Bros,

Here is another information I just got from the papers Metro Express.

Its a free internet service called "丁丁地图"

its a virtual finder for example u want to look for a building or shop for its location and tel nos. It will list down all the shops with a map.
example : KFC, it will list out all the KFC outlets n show u a map of it as well as the transport to take.

If you have MSN just add the address [email protected] or [email protected]
or if you are using QQ add this number 359442198...

Its a website explaining the procedures for applying a Resident Permit here. Its in Chinese and a bit confusing as my chinese cannot make it... :D

FYI, The "Green" booklet (Resident Permit) will be cancelled upon renewal this year.. That's mean, all foreigner must bring their passport to travel within China by Plane. It can be a hassle to bring passport instead of the small Green Booklet travelling...

Bro Shengge,
Thanks for the contribution! I'm sure it'll be useful to bros here one time or another!

As for lobangs for cheap ticket to SG, I think it'll be best if you can find a "partner" to travel with you.. hehehe... then you can enjoy the Twin-Fly Promotion offered by SQ. Hmmmm.... think maybe there is an additional use for this thread afterall... you can post your expected date of departure and return and perhaps some bros will be able to "fit" into that schedule? Otherwise, can negotiate if you give a date range instead of a particular date... :D

One word of caution though... SQ's tax has increased... other flights are now at about Rmb300-Rmb400+ but SQ's tax was Rmb700+ when I last bought.. Sincerely hope that they will re-revise the amount... sigh...

Anyway, hope to see more of your postings! You're full of SH info since you've been "localised".. hahhahaaha

Twin-Fly? No so good lah, I still have to pay for the cost of the "partner" lah.... :p I would prefer the "Double Fly"....haha! (Can you help on this?) :D

After been here for some times, I still don't know Shanghai very well. I only knew how to go back home. Those places, mentioned on Sha Rec lately, paiseh to say, wa long em jai.
By the way, just realised that Singapore Consulate has moved to Wan Shan Road. http://www.mfa.gov.sg/shanghai/images/map.jpg

Dear Bro Shengge,
You don't have to pay for your partner (that is if you don't want to.. hahaha.. but if you need me to travel back with you... well... I'll be glad to if it is paid for... kekkeke...)... what I meant was to utilize this thread as a bulletin board and see if there are any other SG bros going back the same time as you... but for those bros feeling rich, like the bro in Beijing thread who paid Rmb 4,500 for a session with 3 girls, finding a "partner" and returning together might not be an impossiblity.. hahahha...

Double-Fly?? hahahahaha... you have more kangtaos then many of us noobies put together and you're asking MOI for kangtaos?? Hahahahaha... you're being too humble Bro!! When back in SG, note that I've already posted an Escort "service" for bros here.. you might want to check it out... and provide more info upon your return... info like damage, FR, etc etc...

Thank you for the heads up on the change of address information! Did not realise that the Singapore Consulate has moved.... Thanks!!!!

As for your points....well.... I'll up you when I can.. no problemo!!

Why in the world would I zap your points when I have just added for you? hahahahaha.... and since when have I zapped anyone for that matter...

Post your dates in this thread if it is convenient and if any bros dates coincide, then we will get a "closed" deal.. right??

Don't worry about the Double-Fly thingy... you can post anything you want here.. and if any bros have suggestions, they can similarly post them here.. not a problem at all! This thread is for anything under the Sun and not confined to just Shanghai for that matter... hahahaha... it for Bros coming to Shanghai, bros now in Shanghai, bros going back to SG from Shanghai... or anyone else... Dear Bro Shanghaitan,
Do you have any recommendation on a good hospital around that is good for foreigner but not so expensive type?
Thanks in Advance.

Dear Bro linpehgaligong,

As a foreigner, I think the most recommended place would be World Link Medical and Dental. As far as I know, they have 2 branches and the numbers to call are:
6405 5788 (Hong Qiao Clinic)
6279 7688 (Shanghai Center Clinic)
Or you can check out their website www.worldlink-shanghai.com

The treatments will not be cheap, as a matter of fact, it will be EXPENSIVE but if it is our health, I think once in a while, if we have to pay, we have to pay. It's what I consider buying or paying for "Peace Of Mind"...

The reason behind stating the most OBVIOUS choice of healthcare service provider for foreigner is simply because I really don't recommend going to Local Hospitals. The last time I visited a Local Hospital was quite a few years back... maybe it is better now, but I really can't tell honestly... I travel past a hospital on my way to work everyday and just from the look of the entrance, I don't think I want to go back...

Even though I've been in China for a few years now, I think I'd rather die then to have to go back to Local Hospitals AGAIN!... hahhaa... perhaps a little extreme but I just don't like the idea of HUGE CROWDS and LONG QUEUES and worse of all, IV FOR ALMOST ANY ILLNESS YOU MAY HAVE. Plus it is not exactly Cheap per say, as compared to Singapore, and the doctors have been known to prescribe the most expensive and not the most effective medicine wherever possible. This I learnt from a past medical practitioner who has left the profession for feel that there is a lack of professional ethics in the medical profession in general. AND I'm not a fan of needles sticking into me... hahahaha...

I will continue to ask around to see if there are alternatives and will post when I know more...

Hi Bro Shanghaitan & all,
Seeking medical help on foreign land can be really a pain especially on a 'cow-boy' land like China.
Been here for coming 5 years, I, myself health is always not in the pinkiest state so have been going to several medical faclilities, both local & foreign operations.

After many tries, I would recommend the following medical facility to all bros should you fall ill or would like to seek for other medical consultation;

FuDan Hua Shan Hospital, Foreigners' Outpatient Clinic (15th Floor)
Chinese name: 复旦大学附属华山医院, 外宾门诊部门
Tel:021 - 6248 3986 / 021 - 624 9999 (24 Hours)
Address: On Chang Le Road, near junction of Wu Lu Mu Qi Road.

Medical Personnel Ratings:
Doctors : 7/10 (speaks fluent or fairly good english, clean looking & polite)
Nurses : 7/10 (ditto as above)
NOTE: All medical personnel bears an English name i.e. Dr. Micheal Wang or for nurse i.e. Jessica Li.

Overall rating of the clinic:
Equivalent standard in terms of medical attention, cleaniless of environment & service as to Mount Elizabeth of S'pore's standard.
Normal medical consultation charges (excl. medication) at approx. RMB 150 nett (or eq. to SGD$30.00 per consultation)

Hope the above info would be of great use to bros here & most of all providing great assurance to all bros that the least on our health matters are still being taken care of, somehow.

Best regards to all bros,

GOODNESS GRACIOUS GREAT BALLS OF FIRE!!! Bro SGP69 actually graced this thread!! The stars are really shining bright! Happy happy!! Yes! The Great SGP69 appears!! YES!!!

Bro linpehgaligong, you are indeed a lucky star to have attracted Bro SPG69's attention! He's a busy man... lotsa activities and work and "family commitments"! When Bro SGP69 speaks, LISTEN!!! Kapeesh?!?! hahahaha.... Bro SGP69 would know more about medical services here in Shanghai, having been here much longer and is way up on the list of active veterans. He's the man to ask about cheonging and any other misc stuff anyone may have regarding Shanghai. He organizes regular cheonging gatherings for bros here and should you need "company", brotherly or otherwise, Bro SGP69 is THE MAN! ;)

For Sagely advices about "General Information Regarding Life", we have Bros like PuTonRen, Shengge amongst others.... you will see them as time goes by... don't worry...

I'm just a facilitator, providing a "bridging" function... as I'm also a Noobie (aka NoBody) in this land of Dragon (... Ladies...hahhaha)... and I have many who can vouch for my noobie status...

Me galigong, bro SGP69 definitely is the person that know the inside out about Shanghai. A leader.
Me galigong, you are a nice guy around that always willing to offer your assistance. A helper.

Dear Bro Shanghaitan,
I don think it is about bro linpehgaligong being lucky, it is about bro SGP69 being a very capable guy, know Shanghai very well.
For me, I really have nothing much to advice on what you have mentioned here. After all, people like to listen to happy story, erotic encounter then my 'salty vegetable' life. So no point making other miserable too lah. On top of that, those that I have experienced already gone into the history book liao. These days, most bros look very smart and adventurous.
Can you be specific about the sort of bridging function you offer?

Dear Bro Shanghaitan,
Good Day. I fully understand your situation.I think it worth a little bit of understanding on how the medical system work here, after all I don't want to see you die here........... :D
Procedures as such:
1) collect nos (this is not queue nos)
2) see doctor (depending on the hospital, for some you just went straight into the doctor room, cut the queue as when the doctor is available, other may have a row of queuing chairs outside the room)
3) pay for your blood test fee (with the receipt then you can go for the blood test)
4) see doctor again
5) pay for medicine fee
6) collect your medicine

This is the standard and shortest way. There was once, I have to see the doctor for 4 times, as I have to go thru, blood test, X-ray, injection and dripping, plus medicine................for fever.

As you can see the situation, the poor will normally prescribe from pharmachy and one thing I realised that all local are very knowledgeable on the medicine for various sort of illness.

Hospitalization can be a very bad experience as well. But I will not going to that now.

Due to the huge population in China, their behind medical function and welfare system, it may take some times for this to be changed. I am sure it will become better.

Cheers!

If Bro linpehgaligong is not lucky, the Bro SGP69 will not even view this thread, let alone give his valuable advice right? There is however no doubt the Bro SGP69 is a very capable guy who knows Shanghai very well.. that much is already known by anyone who reads the Shanghai Recommendation Thread (well.. that's just about every samster in or intending to visit Shanghai.. hahaha)

As for the "bridging" function that I do, it is primarily to link up bros with similar "interests" or needs with someone who "knows" the ropes.. me being a noobie knows nuts... hahahaha... right?

For example, you wanted to travel back to Singapore.. well..you can use this thread to see if anyone else wants to travel at about the same time..

For Bros looking for nice place to eat, the thread becomes a medium to "inform" the rest... etc etc

On hindsight, it is the thread that is the bridge and not me.. hahahah.... I merely started it and provide whatever little information that I might come across in my mundane life...

If I have things or know people who will be able to provide the "help" required, then I will serve as the bridge and connect the bros...

Had a sprained neck recently. Went to this hospital (at Huaihai Rd, near Hongkong Plaza) known as the best TMC hospital in Shanghai. Saw the doctor (a professor), showed him the X-ray film (taken from a district hospital the day before) and straight away he could tell me my problem (the doctor I saw the day before knew nuts about my problem)! Told me to lie on the bed facing down. He gave me shouder, neck and upper back tui na. Then he told me to sit on a chair. He put his hand across my head (like a wrestler doing a lock hold) and without any warning or hesitation, he twisted my neck! C-R-A-C-K!!! My accompanying local colleague and driver were both shocked and awed! The cracking noise was so loud it could be heard outside the consultation room! Next thing I felt, the pain from my neck was magically gone!!!

Dear Bro shengge,

Couldn't checked the forum as much as I want to as u understand. Sianz..

As I do not have a laptop or PC at home so a bit difficult...and my apologies if I can't seem to be contactable or just talk cock like last time....

Ok anyway for cheap airtickets, I do not have any good lobang but most of the time I get it from Ctrip (http://www.ctrip.com)

Sometimes when I took the bus service back from the airport, someone is there to give out this blue booklet and a membership card...u just need to log on n register. I find them to be quite reasonable price as I did called for their service when I travel back to SGP or korea last year. And they will deliver the tix to your office or residence too. I did check around with a few other agencies but differences only maybe 50-100rmb...

Hopes this will help some bros out here....

Dear Bro nongho,
I am looking at the sha-sin ticket.
Anyway, thanks for the info, I do not travel by plane often with China. I am under local term....so I take train only........haha.

About laptop, I think it is neccessity for those that travel around. My suggestion is that you can get IBM from SGP, they are generally cheaper than in China. A more stable laptop pc, get the 3 years warranty package, you will not have much problem in Shanghai. Their after sales service is OK.
Remarks : I don't work for IBM.

Well, generally this are the two places that sell computer, I don't have any lobang with any of this shops. However, if you want to buy a handphone here, I do know a shop, their price is generally cheaper than market rate by a few hundred RMB.

Indeed that Medical Facilities in some parts of China can be really a shock to one's view espeially when one is so ill yet have to bear with the kinda of medical facility as well as environment...sigh...been afew times in S'hai to one of these kinda of medical facility b4 as u mentioned here bro......almost walkd out immediately man! I think I'll end up more ill than ever if I stay on there...but then 'boh pian' since ill so have to grit my teeth & bear with it....also too 'green' in China then dunno where to go, so LL lor...

Agreed with u that one travel has to bring along some basic medication just incase.
For myself I bring along Panadol, Medicated Oil & Charcoal pills (Anti-Diarrohea).........the mentioned medication can be purchase in S'hai at all Watsons Stores....
For all bros to note.

I found out enetually that it is actually the OS that plays a part in this issue not so much on the brand.

I was told the best WINDOWS OS so far is still WIN 98 (Generation 2)...the bloody XP Pro OS I'm using now is like u said here hang pretty often....sigh....
Cheers bro.

Like I said b4, I'm merely sharing whatever info I have encountered here whenther in person or heard from friends though.....pls dun put 'tall hats' on me....U r also sharing quite a fair bit of info here as well bro...u even organised up this new Thread for all bros benefit! U r more helpful than me or even anyone else here......U r good soul bro.........!!!

Bro SGP69,
I don't put "tall hats" on anyone.. because I don't say what I don't mean.. with your ample experience and vast network of friends, you have the means to advice others, unlike me... no experience, no big circles of friends.. no happening "life" to even mention.. hahahahahha... :p

This thread is primarily for "off topics" that does not relate to Cheonging, unlike the Shanghai recommendation thread... and I merely started it to ease bros having to go through 200+ pages or having to ask "silly" questions in the main thread. Also, since I've "retired" from the main thread, I was thinking perhaps I can still contribute to the Shanghai community in whatever little way I can, which by the way is very little... hahahah.. and that's a fact!

Glad to see veterans like yourself contributing. Thank you so much!! On behalf of myself and any other bros who benefited from this thread.. I would like to extend a big "THANK YOU!!!!!" to you!!

You're most welcome.....no need to say the ig Thank U. It's merely sharing of little info for all bros...
Hope my info shared herewith is relevance and not of irrelevance to any bros whom needed info, whether to eat, to travel or other matters.
I like your lifestyle u r leading bro....infact I'm half as 'laid-off' as u r here bro. Simple life style daily, work, dinner with empress, watch DVDs/TV, bed-time....
Occasional catchup with the bros here....

Anyway, not that I'm very literate with computers bro, just learning along the way & ask if I'm not sure that's all.
The computer expert here would probably be Bro Shanghaitan as his profession is in this line remember Bro Shengge?
Perhaps Bro Shanhaitan would be the best person to ask on this subject.

No body is a big bro here unless our largely adored Big Bro PTR really 'step away' from the scenes here as mentioned...in terms of seniority in both age & life experiences, I'm still a far cry from alot of u, including u bro!

We all have alot to share & learn from one another bro. Just like the time when I'm down & depressed, u will tere to share all your life experiences with me, consoling me in many ways to perspectives in life....really thankful to u for being there bro!

Having said leading a daily routine life now, is merely a statement to say that I've been lying low, spending most of my time at work, even in Sats, and last but not least spending most of my daily routine after work with my Empress.
Kinda like the life style now, simple yet peaceful...

Yes, the 'occasional' catch up with the rest of the bros recently have been pretty frequent though...mainly with the joining in of new bros here like Bro cateyes001, WakkO & the rest. But also, afew occasions I didn't join them eventually because of either work or personal reasons.

Let's us both catch up sometime after work to your time convenience for dinner perhaps bro. My new job work place is very nearby to your house (on Fuxing Rd, FengYang Rd junction) so I can meet u up after work simply by walking over to meet u.

Let me know your schedule or sms me bro.
Take care and best regards.

I did not know about bro Shanghaitan field of work very well, let's not discuss about other bros background here, though it is very brief.
Honourable Bro PTR, respectable Bro Shanghaitan and enviable U are so far the 3 persons that I have known here that I admired very much. Defnitely not to forget bros like CEO junior_cannibals, helpful WhambamTYM, great performer Mavericks72 and knowledgeable Singa.

Dear Bro Shengge,
U dun have to 'grade' yourself that 'little' or Junior here....
I'm sure lots of us bros here knew for the very fact that u r the most localised person here among us all, as u being a 50% "local status"......

I dun deserved to be mentioned among the great names u mentioned above as I didn't contribute much relevant info or even contributed out-dated info to many bros for all I knew. Pardon me if I did so bros.

Having my laptop crashing one day, and being equivalent to the amount of 11 bottels of Chivas bro as u said here.......I rather pay for the repair of my notebook instead! Alcohol kills me but my notebook does good to me....

Bro SGP69,
Don't quite agree with you lah. Many people came to China for various reasons, as for my case, I just live here and leading to similar life as I was in SGP, especially after picking some sports lately. So a very normal local life but not yet localised.

However, I agreed with what you have said on notebook, that was why I rather spent another equivalent amt of 22 bottles of Chivas for my notebook.

I don't give people tall hats.. I don't.. you should know better than that.. I'm a simple person.. a very basic "organism".. I don't say what I don't mean and delivers what I have said.. or I won't say anything at all....

And I am nothing when we're comparing experience in China. I don't have "farms" or even "cows" in a long long time, I don't have an "Empress" waiting for me at home, I don't have a great job and I don't cheong much.. to me.. I'm not in this league of extraordinary gentlemen that you guys are in and since I've stopped most "activities", I'll never have the chance to be in this league anymore..

As for the computer thingy, I'm no expert.. never was one and never will be.. I just happen to like such techy stuff.. just know that when purchacing from overseas, make sure that the original receipt is present and the warranty is international... otherwise, authorized repair centers will not process it... will have to resort to the so-called grey markets.. those un-authorized repair outfits...

Anyway, happy cheonging!

I can never lead to the kind of lifestyle that BIG Bro SGP69 is having.
I am not active at all. Those bros are just being very humble, paiseh to say that they are very active. Comparing to those activities that they have, I would say mine is stagnant.
So what does it like when these bros get together?
Look to me like a company, Director PTR, CEO Junior Cannibal, COO SGP69, GM WhamBamTYM, Customer service Maverick, Ultraman must be PRO then, Shengge as Supervisor, while U can be the quality control.

Since when both of you have been tracking my SPI, a new hobby. You should be tracking that of shengge, WhamBam or others.

Well, a week in China, and only discharged my duty to prolong the human population thrice. Two in Beijing and one in Xian (yesterday night). Tonight is work and rest night. Tomorrow might perform the duty again as the friend of the Dong Bei girl who was with me was calling me for dinner with them (Threesome, hahaha... no way... My advanced aged body cannot take it.).

Regards to all. :D

Dear Bro PTR,
When compared to yours, I envy the steep curve of your SPI, while my slope is extremely flat. Bro WhamBamTYM is young certainly higher than mine, however, mine is lower than yours. :( Any secret to share on maintaining high SPI? :p

Dear Big Bro PutonRen,
It is not a hobby... it is a "job"... undertaken by none other then Bro Shengge.. I'm just the data compiler...

Rest assured that we are tracking everyone's SPI. In fact, we don't just track SPIs because in order to come about the "ranking" for Company positions, we also take into serious consideration Life Experience, China Experience, PRC Bonk-counts (Paid and KumCheng bonks considered separately), Overseas Bonk-counts (again, Paid and KumCheng bonks considered separately) and the mysterious "X" factor (Charisma, Charm, Style and "desirability" <computed based on the frequency women throw themselves at the "candidate", which in Big Bro's case is very very frequent, with an immediate example quoted above.. > ) ... note that this list is not exhaustive and there are other "factors" being taken into consideration from time to time.. much like the importance of ECA/School Representation etc when getting into JCs or Universities...

All these results will be charted and Bros excelling in certain categories will be given certain "positions" within the "Corporation".. hehehe..

Therefore, taking all the individual components listed above, Big Bro, you're the undisputed "KING" with off the chart points in all the above mentioned "selection" criteria!

Looking forward to your impending arrival!

Bro Shanghaitan, shengge and SGP,

First, Bro Shanghaitan, you make me shy in front of many brothers here who are very humble to keep quiet about their activities. I am in no way compared to many of them. Please, I am not the "King". There are King of the Kings around. I prefer to stay Simple and be a humble self. I hope you understand.

Shengge is another such humble example, as pointed out by Bro SGP. He knows the way and have taught me many things for which I appreciate deeply. What say you? Bro Shengge.

Bro SGP is another humble and helpful person who never stops in giving advices when asked, and at many instances, volunteers to give advices. Bro JC is another King who decides not to post so that I could stay appear King. He is the King.

I certainly look forward to meet you all again in Shanghai for a Tea Session. I am still stuck in this rural Western City of China with no adventure, but wish high "S" count. Sigh.......

Boh leh. Where got? Sad to say, I can't even be a good tourguide when you were here. Showed you two tea houses, both are not as good as what you have brought us to. Really embarrassed. As I told Bro SGP69, I am not so localised.

Let's not put tall hat on each other lah. However, I would like to thank you for sharing your valuable experience with me, and lending your big hand while I have some problems. Especially, to disturb your nite of fun with my misery.

Hi there Big Bro PuTonRen,
First and foremost, I would like to say that there is no need to be shy... none at all when well deserved. To be humble is a virtue but when you're at the Top, please take a little time out to bask in the glory! It is something that you deserve... CHEERS!!!

As for there being King of Kings around.. well.. there always are and always will be... that's why the World as it is today is not as United as idealised... So many countries, so many leaders... and even in the Lord of the Rings, The One Ring that was made to Rule Them All was destroyed because it is just not possible for there to be a true King of Kings! Just some Kings with their own "people"... right?

I'm one of your "people" and thus you're my King... others may not agree with me but who cares?!?! To each his own.... if tired of being a "follower", by all means, use whatever ambition driving him on to build his own "Empire".. no one is or can stop anyone... hahahaha...

NKF CEO's $600,000 pay revealed in court

By Bertha Henson
SUPERVISING EDITOR (HOME)

A CLOSELY guarded secret of the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) was finally made public yesterday: the salary of its chief executive T.T. Durai.

Gasps could be heard in the courtroom when it was revealed that on top of his $25,000 a month salary, he also received 10 to 12 months in yearly bonuses. That makes his annual salary between $550,000 and $600,000, or $1.8 million in total over the past three years.

This fact, and the disclosure that he had flown first class on NKF's funds, emerged on Day 1 of NKF's defamation suit against Singapore Press Holdings (SPH).

The NKF, which is entirely dependent on public funds, offers dialysis treatment to kidney patients. Two out of every three Singaporeans contribute to it.

It is taking issue with a Straits Times article by senior correspondent Susan Long published on April 19 last year, which stated that a gold-plated tap had been installed and later replaced in the private bathroom in Mr Durai's office suite.

The NKF and Mr Durai contend that this was not the case and that the words in the article, 'The NKF: Controversially ahead of its time?', had damaged their reputation by implying that donors' funds were being misused. The hearing yesterday was delayed by the NKF's application for special damages of $3.24 million, which it claimed was what it lost in donations following the publication of the article. Justice Tan Lee Meng threw out the application and ordered the NKF to pay SPH's legal cost for its last-minute move.

At the hearing, Senior Counsel Davinder Singh, acting for SPH, noted that the tap in question cost $990, expensive by his standards although Mr Durai did not agree. The lawyer sought to show that the NKF was neither honest nor transparent about the way it uses donors' funds.

He told the court he had to ask the NKF three times, twice through the courts, to have the salary of its CEO made public.

Mr Durai, represented by Senior Counsel Michael Khoo, was the only witness who took the stand yesterday. Among those in the gallery was NKF patron, Mrs Goh Chok Tong, wife of the Senior Minister, who left midway through the hearing.

Mr Durai argued that he was not required by law to tell the public what he earned, even though he conceded that they paid his salary. Also, he wanted to protect his personal privacy.

Mr Singh asked: 'The man who earns $1,000 a month who donates $50... every month thinking that it is going to save lives, should they not know that that is the kind of money you earn?' Replied Mr Durai: 'I don't see the need for him to know.' He denied Mr Singh's charge that he refused to disclose his salary as he knew he would lose moral authority with donors.

Mr Durai's travel perks also came under scrutiny.

Not only had the NKF maintained consistently - as recently as in the April 19 article - that none of its executives flew first class, it had threatened to sue people who said Mr Durai did so.

At least two people have had to apologise publicly and pay damages and costs for saying they had seen Mr Durai travel first class, as the NKF said this implied he was wasting donors' funds.

Under questioning, he admitted he had flown first class on some airlines. His explanation: The NKF board allowed this as long as he did not bust the Singapore Airlines business-class rate.

Mr Singh countered: 'Isn't it your duty as a trustee of people's monies to make sure that you get best value on a business-class seat instead of deploying this clever tactic... using it for first class on another plane?'

Mr Durai replied: 'This is a decision made by the board. I used the entitlement.' The entitlement, he added, kicked in only in the past two years. Previously, when he flew first class, he had paid the difference out of his own pocket, he maintained.

Mr Singh noted that although he now flew first class, Mr Durai did not correct his chairman Richard Yong's assertion in the April 19 article that 'there is no such thing as first-class travel'.

'The reason you hide the truth is because you know that that is the wrong thing to do, using people's money, and you know that is mismanagement of donations.'

Mr Durai was asked if he should now 'do the right thing' by the two individuals who had paid him damages and costs for saying what he had now admitted in court. He said no, sticking to his claim that at that time, he did not travel first class using NKF funds and when he did so, he paid the difference himself.

NKF CEO drops suit against SPH

After a day of dramatic disclosures, T.T. Durai admits an article in The Straits Times was not defamatory
By Bertha Henson
SUPERVISING EDITOR (HOME)

FOR 10 minutes yesterday, those who packed Courtroom 5B were sitting on the edge of their seats.

Senior Counsel Davinder Singh, acting for Singapore Press Holdings, had asked the big question: Would the National Kidney Foundation and its chief T.T. Durai now drop its defamation suit against SPH.

Ten minutes later, at 5pm, the answer came: 'Yes'.

But it was not before several interjections by NKF's lawyer Michael Khoo, who tried but failed to get Justice Tan Lee Meng to give him time to consult his client.

By then, Mr Durai had agreed with Mr Singh that there was nothing defamatory about the Straits Times report that sparked the NKF's legal action.

The lawyer had taken him through the allegedly contentious points one by one, from the headline down, and he agreed there was nothing wrong with the story.

So ended a day of dramatic disclosures in court over the way the NKF had misled the public on the number of patients it was treating, and the number of years its reserves would last.

First revelation: In 2003, the NKF had reserves of $220 million - enough, the NKF had maintained, to last just three years.

But Mr Singh yesterday took the court through its 2003 financial statements and showed that if all fund-raising activities were stopped, the money could last 30 years.

Here is how he worked out the numbers: It costs the NKF $31.6 million a year to treat all its dialysis patients, but they pay part of the bill, amounting to $24.4 million. This means the NKF only needed to make up for the $7.2 million shortfall.

With reserves of $220 million, it could go on treating these patients for another 30 years, without any additional donation.

'The purpose of putting out that false statement was so as to give the public the impression that NKF continued to be in dire need of funds for those poor patients,' said Mr Singh.

Mr Durai denied this, maintaining that any money contributed was for the 'benefit of the people'.

Revelation number two: In April last year, the NKF said it was treating 3,000 patients when in fact there were just 2,000.

Again, this created the impression that the NKF needed more funds - about $31 million more for the non-existent 1,000 patients.

Mr Durai admitted the number was wrong but denied that there was any intention to deceive the public.

'It was an oversight. I did not think it was of material importance. People give us money because of the brand of the NKF, so I did not think it important to correct the patient numbers.'

Mr Singh was carrying through the theme he started on Monday, that the NKF was not transparent in its finances and that its use of donors' funds was controversial.

He had told the court then that NKF finally revealed, after three requests to do so, that Mr Durai earned $25,000 a month, plus 10 to 12 months in yearly bonuses in recent years.

And contrary to frequent denials in the past, Mr Durai also admitted that he had travelled first class on NKF funds, albeit at Singapore Airlines Business Class rates, which the NKF board had agreed to.

The other disclosures made yesterday:

Mr Durai was among six officers who could make use of a fleet of eight cars with company drivers at any time. The NKF also pays for the road tax and repair and maintenance bills for his own private car, a Mercedes-Benz 200.

Mr Durai had several paid directorships that he had not disclosed to the NKF board.

He had a 'commercial relationship' with Ms Matilda Chua, a member of the NKF Board, who has interests in a call centre that is contracted with NKF. This, too, he did not declare to the board.

The NKF had sued SPH over the opening paragraphs of an article published in The Straits Times on April 19 last year headlined: 'The NKF: Controversially ahead of its time?'

In it, senior correspondent Susan Long had reported the outraged reaction of a contractor who had been asked to install gold-plated taps in the bathroom in Mr Durai's private office.

The taps were later replaced.

The NKF and Mr Durai charged that this was tantamount to saying that the NKF had misused donors' funds by splurging on toilet fittings.

But by the end of yesterday, Mr Durai conceded that the taps - one of which cost $990 - that were initially installed were lavish, a 'mistake' made by a former NKF employee who could not be reached.

He also conceded that there were other fittings - such as an $1,100 toilet bowl - that an ordinary person earning $3,000 to $4,000 a month would consider expensive.

The hearing was adjourned yesterday after Mr Durai's dramatic withdrawal of the suit, and will resume today when the issue of costs will be decided.

Looking drained at the end of the hearing, Mr Durai told reporters that he would leave it to the public to decide if NKF had hidden the truth from them.

Last night, in response to queries from The Straits Times, an NKF spokesman said that some donors had cancelled their contributions after reports of hearings were made public.

'We know that those who have donated steadfastly to the NKF and understand the work we do will continue to support us.'

In a statement last night, SPH said that it was glad Mr Durai and the NKF had withdrawn the suit and now acknowledged that the article in question was accurate and fair.

'SPH and The Straits Times have had to defend themselves vigorously to protect the integrity of the newspaper and its duty to raise issues of legitimate public interest.'

AFTER THE CASE IS OVER - WHAT NKF CHIEF AND PATRON SAY
T.T. Durai: I have done nothing wrong

OVER two days in court, the disclosures about Mr T.T. Durai and the NKF ranged from his salary and bonuses, to his first-class air travel, directorships in several companies and the charity's finances.

But the NKF chief executive told reporters after dropping his defamation suit against Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) and senior correspondent Susan Long that he did not think the case would have much impact on the public.

He maintained that he did nothing wrong, and saw no reason to step down now.

'Our track record speaks for itself,' he said. 'We may not be perfect, but we have struggled to be perfect. It is inevitable that mistakes do occur. I have tried for 37 years to do my best for the people of Singapore.'

He spent two days in the witness stand before he brought the hearing to a dramatic close by deciding to drop the legal action.

As reporters in the courtroom crowded around him, about half a dozen NKF staff tried to advise him not to speak to the media.

But a drained Mr Durai, who had been on the stand for six hours, waved off his staff and took questions from reporters.

Asked if he had anticipated that he would withdraw his defamation suit against SPH, he replied that litigation was always 'fraught with difficulties'.

He said he stopped the legal action because he saw that it was in the NKF's interest to do so, given that The Straits Times was an 'important partner'.

He added that he was 'not responsible' for what had actually happened in 1994 when the furnishings were fitted in the bathroom of his office. All he knew was that they were part of a 'lump sum contract'.

He was asked what changes he would make at the NKF, as he had admitted in court that there had been 'mistakes' in the way the charity operated.

'Whatever we did was right. We didn't want to hide the truth. Now the public will know and it's for them to decide,' he said.

'We have discharged our obligations in building a world-class programme, a cancer care programme...'

Will he be making changes to the way the organisation operates?

'We will consider it,' he said.

Will he resign?

'No, unless people want me to,' he said. 'I will continue to serve as I have done nothing wrong.'

The impromptu press conference over, Mr Durai walked to the SPH side of the courtroom to shake hands with Straits Times editor Han Fook Kwang and Ms Long.

Sombre-faced NKF officials then accompanied him out of the courtroom.

ON ITS RESERVES
Enough for just 3 years? More like 30 to 40 years

CEO admits assertion its reserves would last just 3 years is 'not accurate'
By Sharon Loh

THE National Kidney Foundation falsely inflated the number of patients it treats and understated how long its financial reserves would last, its chief executive Mr T.T. Durai conceded yesterday.

Mr Durai admitted in court that if NKF's reserves of $262 million were used simply to treat dialysis patients, they would last 30 to 40 years, not three years, as the foundation has long claimed. He also admitted that the NKF had made 'a few errors' over the years in telling the public how many patients it treats
But he denied that there was a deliberate strategy to mislead the public, saying that he and his colleagues 'honestly believed' they should raise as much money as they could for the 'patients of the future'.

In May last year, Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan informed Parliament that the NKF had treated 1,414 patients in 1999 and 1,512 patients in 2003.

The previous month, the NKF had told The Straits Times that it needed about $2,600 a month to support each of its 2,000 patients, a total of $62.4 million per year.

The charity cited those figures to bolster its argument that its reserves were not excessive. Based on its expenditure of more than $60 million a year for dialysis, the reserves would last three years, it said.

But yesterday, during the defamation case NKF had launched against Singapore Press Holdings, the court was shown how the NKF in fact spent far less on dialysis than the public had been led to believe.

According to its 2003 audited financial statement, it spent $31.6 million that year on dialysis and transplantation. Of that amount, $22.9 million came from dialysis fees it collected from patients and a further $1.5 million came from other related income.

So NKF was out of pocket by only $7.2 million, noted Mr Davinder Singh, who was acting for SPH.

He asked Mr Durai: 'If you stopped all fundraising activities and concentrated purely on treating kidney patients, the NKF can continue for at least another 30 years without raising a single cent. True or false?'

Mr Durai initially disagreed, saying that no one could be sure patients would continue to pay their share for the treatments. But he finally agreed that NKF's assertion that the reserves would last only three years was 'not accurate'.

'It is not accurate; in other words, it is false?' asked Mr Singh.

'Yes,' said Mr Durai.

He told the court that this impression had never been corrected.

'We always took the point that if the patients do not pay the moneys for dialysis, the reserves would last only for three years. That is the way we answered the public,' he said.

But Mr Singh noted that even if the NKF had to foot the entire dialysis bill of $31.6 million a year, its current reserves of $262 million would last more than eight years.

He suggested that there was a 'conspiracy', a 'deliberate strategy' to create a false impression of need so that NKF would get more money, a suggestion Mr Durai rejected.

Mr Durai also denied that his performance bonus was linked to the amount of donations NKF received.

Mr Singh then asked him why he would not come clean on the matter.

'The money is for the people,' said Mr Durai.

'And your taps,' retorted Mr Singh.

NKF had sued SPH over an article written by senior correspondent Susan Long, which recounted an incident in which expensive fittings, including taps, had been installed in the bathroom of Mr Durai's private office suite.

On the question of how many patients the NKF actually treats, Mr Singh noted that the organisation's estimates had changed over time.

A letter written to The Straits Times in April last year by the chairman of its Children's Medical Fund board, Dr Gerard Chuah, had claimed that the NKF had 3,000 patients.

Mr Singh pointed out the number had been overstated by about 1,000.

Mr Durai said he realised there was a mistake only after the letter had been published, but had not corrected it.

Mr Singh asked: 'So in addition to the travel and the reserves, we now know that even the number of patients that were being put out as being treated by NKF was erroneous and remains uncorrected; right?'

'Yes,' Mr Durai replied.

When asked why he had done nothing to correct it, he said: 'It was an oversight. I did not think it was of material importance. The donor gives us money because of the brand of the NKF and I did not think it was so important at that point of time to correct this error.'

Mr Singh suggested that the number had been inflated to create a false impression of need. In fact, according to Mr Khaw's reply to Parliament last year, NKF's 'share' of kidney patients in Singapore had dropped, from 54 per cent in 1999 to 44 in 2003.

Mr Durai maintained that NKF had not deliberately set out to create a false impression to attract more funds. He also disagreed that the failure of the NKF management to correct the errors amounted to mismanagement.

'Whatever we did was to grow the programmes,' he said. 'We did it not with deliberateness to deceive anyone at all.'

ON LACK OF TRANSPARENCY
Board not told of his other seats

T.T. Durai was paid up to $25,000 for holding other directorships, but never informed NKF board
By Selina Lum

WHILE he worked full-time as chief executive of the National Kidney Foundation, Mr T.T. Durai was also a director of a number of other companies. And he was paid sums of up to $25,000 a year by them, over and above his NKF remuneration package.

But he never told the NKF board, and did not list these directorships in his curriculum vitae.

The details emerged yesterday when he was questioned by Senior Counsel Davinder Singh.

It was also revealed that Mr Durai had a business relationship with Ms Matilda Chua, a one-time employee of the NKF, who left to start her own company.

Not only did he invest in her business, but the NKF also gave her telemarketing contracts, and she eventually became a member of the NKF board as well.

Mr Singh said Mr Durai had tried to give the impression in his affidavit that he was being thoughtful when he agreed to come on board as CEO in 1992 for just $12,000 a month even though he had been offered $20,000.

The truth, counsel said, was that Mr Durai had agreed to the lower pay in exchange for freedom to earn extra income outside the NKF.

When Mr Singh produced Mr Durai's CV and asked if it was complete, Mr Durai answered: 'Not exactly.'

He disclosed that he had once worked for a company known as Bonyad Marketing Industries, which he described as an Iranian charity, for $7,000 a month.

He said he was its representative here from 1990 to 1992 but decided to give that up when he became NKF's chief executive.

He admitted that in 2000, he had invested in Ms Chua's company, Global Net Relations, but did not disclose to the NKF board that he was a director of the company.

Counsel then probed him on the director's fees he had collected while he was working full-time as the NKF's CEO.

Mr Durai said he was paid $25,000 a year each as a director of Amcol Holdings between 1990 and 1996 and an Australian company, Overseas & General, 'for a couple of years'.

He also received 'some nominal sum' as a director of MediaCorp TV12.

Mr Davinder Singh told him: 'The position is this: While you were expected to be and paid as a full-time CEO, you were earning fees outside NKF which were not disclosed to the NKF or to the public.'

Mr Durai replied: 'That's correct. The NKF board gave me the liberty to do so.'

Mr Davinder Singh continued: 'Mr Durai, your CV is yet another illustration of the lack of transparency with which you operate.

'You do not come clean on what you do, you do not tell the board what you do, how much you earn. You do not tell the board about your commercial relationship with a person who has a contract with the NKF. Is that transparency?'

Mr Durai said: 'They were not very consequential, in my opinion.'

He said it was not necessary for him to disclose to the board and added that the directorships were 'just appearances'.

Davinder Singh: Directorships are not appearances, Mr Durai. They are serious appointments requiring people to focus on the work that has to be done, do you agree?

T.T. Durai: Yes, I attend board meetings, yes.

Davinder Singh: You have to spend time on these matters, is that not right?

T.T. Durai: I did not spend very much time.

Davinder Singh: Yet you took the fees?

T.T. Durai: Yes, I attended board meetings.

THE National Kidney Foundation has a fleet of eight cars with company drivers and chief executive T.T. Durai is one of six officers who can make use of them at any time.

He also has his own Mercedes-Benz 200 car for his personal and family use, and his wife also drives it. But the NKF pays the car's road tax and picks up the bills for maintenance and repairs.

In his sworn affidavit, Mr Durai said that the office fleet was used by officers who had to visit NKF facilities to attend to the needs of the centres and patients.

Aside from himself, the others are four doctors and a senior nurse educator.

The office cars are also used to transport VIPs and guests of the charity.

'I do not see the availability of cars as a luxury but rather, see them as a necessity in light of the work demanded of us by the NKF,' he said in his affidavit.

Senior Counsel Davinder Singh questioned him on the cars yesterday.

Mr Durai said that as CEO, he was entitled to use any of the cars any time he wanted. He also admitted that he had used the office cars for personal use.

Asked if he also had a private car, Mr Durai said that he had a Mercedes-Benz and that the NKF paid for its road tax, maintenance and repairs. He added that this car was also for important guests and functions.

Davinder Singh: So the donations which are being given by the public also go to repairing a Mercedes-Benz that is used by your wife?

T.T. Durai: By the family and also for the NKF.

Davinder Singh: And the donations which are given by the public are also used to pay for the maintenance and road tax for a Mercedes-Benz for your wife?

T.T. Durai: No, it is also for the use of the NKF at times.

Counsel suggested that in fact, the car was not for the NKF's use. But Mr Durai stuck by what he had said earlier.

Davinder Singh: What really happens is, your wife and family have the benefit of one car, and you, whenever it pleases you, have the benefit of another with a driver. All from donations, correct?

T.T. Durai: These are my entitlements and I use them.

'Commercial relationship' with Matilda Chua under spotlight

MATILDA Chua was a full-time employee of the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) who left to form Global Net Relations, a telemarketing company.

One of the investors in her enterprise was NKF chief executive T.T. Durai.

She was also the representative of a second company, Proton Web Solutions, a telemarketing company with a call centre based in India, which was given an NKF contract. She went from being an NKF employee to Mr Durai's business partner, an NKF contractor and finally, she joined the NKF board of directors as well.

Senior Counsel Davinder Singh yesterday probed Mr Durai on his 'commercial relationship' with Ms Chua.

Davinder Singh: Does the NKF have a relationship with (Proton Web Solutions)?

T.T. Durai: Yes.

Davinder Singh: What is the nature of that relationship?
T.T. Durai: I think we contracted our call centre work with them.

Davinder Singh: They do telemarketing for NKF?

T.T. Durai: Yes.

Davinder Singh: They earn a fee?

T.T. Durai: Yes.

Davinder Singh: Is there a member of the board of NKF who is also interested in this company, Proton Web?

T.T. Durai: Yes.

Davinder Singh: Who is that?

T.T. Durai: Ms Matilda Chua.

Davinder Singh: What is she in Proton Web?

T.T. Durai: I think she is a representative of the company.

Davinder Singh: So she is the Singapore rep?

T.T. Durai: Yes.

Davinder Singh: And she therefore benefits as a result of that contract between NKF and Proton Web? In fact, she has disclosed it in the financial statements?

T.T. Durai: Yes.

Davinder Singh: Did you have any relationship with Ms Chua in terms of business?

T.T. Durai: Yes.

Davinder Singh: What relationship was that?
T.T. Durai: I helped her to - she was involved in setting up a company known as Global Net Relations in 2000.

Davinder Singh: What does that company do?

T.T. Durai: It was also doing call centre work, at the height of the Internet boom.

Davinder Singh: Did you disclose this to the NKF?

T.T. Durai: No, I did not disclose it to the NKF because I just invested in the company. I participated in the growth of the company.

Davinder Singh: So the situation is, you were an investor in a company, in which Matilda Chua is also an investor, right?

T.T. Durai: Yes.

Davinder Singh: You were a director of that company as well?

T.T. Durai: Yes, I was.

Davinder Singh: As was Matilda?

T.T. Durai: Yes.

Davinder Singh: All of this is not disclosed to the NKF, right?

T.T. Durai: Yes, it was not material at that point.

Davinder Singh: Matilda Chua is also the representative of a company called Proton which benefits from NKF business?

T.T. Durai: Yes.

Davinder Singh: And you arranged to bring her onto the board of NKF as well?
T.T. Durai: She joined the board, yes.

Davinder Singh: It has to be on your invitation, surely?

T.T. Durai: No, my colleagues invited her.

Davinder Singh: And you had nothing to do with it?

T.T. Durai: No, I accepted it.

Davinder Singh: You had nothing to do with it?

T.T. Durai: I had a part to play in that, yes.

Davinder Singh: You did. Is it a coincidence that Proton Web and Global operated out of the same premises in Singapore?

T.T. Durai: I would not know that.

Davinder Singh: I am asking you, sir, as an investor, and a director of Global, is it a coincidence that these two companies operate out of the same premises in Singapore? If you do not know what they are, it is 7 Temasek Boulevard, Suntec Tower. Does that ring a bell?

T.T. Durai: Yes, but I had given up my interest in Global sometime last year.

Davinder Singh: That is not my question. My question is: is it a coincidence?

T.T. Durai: No.

Davinder Singh: Why is it not a coincidence?

T.T. Durai: Because Ms Matilda Chua is involved in the companies, I presume.

Davinder Singh: Now, sir, the position therefore is, you have a commercial relationship with a lady, Ms Chua, who has a contract with the NKF through Proton Web?

T.T. Durai: Yes.

Davinder Singh: Ms Chua benefits from that contract with NKF, correct?

T.T. Durai: Yes.

Davinder Singh: And you, in turn, have a benefit in that relationship with Ms Chua through Global Net?

T.T. Durai: That is not true.

ON DIRE PICTURE OF ITS FUNDS
CEO 'wanted to raise as much money for patients' future'

ALL along, the NKF had maintained that its reserve funds would last only three years
A different picture emerged in court yesterday when Senior Counsel Davinder Singh took Mr T.T. Durai through the charity's accounts.

Counsel also brought up the Straits Times article by senior correspondent Susan Long, which quoted NKF chairman Richard Yong saying he was worried that if the NKF did not have enough funds, he would end up having to decide which patients would live, and which would be left to die.

Counsel said that was a false statement, and as he proceeded to question Mr Durai, he read out parts of the article. This is an excerpt of their exchange:

Davinder Singh: The purpose of putting out that false statement was to give the public the impression that NKF continued to be in dire need of funds for those poor patients. True?

Related links
Click here to view the details of the case
T.T. Durai: Yes, NKF required funds to support the patients, yes.

Davinder Singh: So that the donors will ignorantly donate more and more, true?

T.T. Durai: The donors will donate, yes.

Davinder Singh: And the more they donate, the more your performance ranking goes up, the more your bonus, true?

T.T. Durai: No.

Davinder Singh: Because yesterday you said you got your bonus based on your performance, so you have a vested interest in publishing untruths to inflate the donations so that, ultimately, you inflate your bonus?

T.T. Durai: No, I did it for the interests of the people of Singapore, to build more and more programmes, go from dialysis to prevention to cancer, to taking care of children.

Davinder Singh: This is not the only place where the false statement was made about three years ago, is that not right? You have also made that false statement in these proceedings, do you agree?

T.T. Durai: Can you confirm that?

Davinder Singh: Sure. Before I take you to that reply, I want you to look at the article itself. (There) is a photo of a very anxious Mr Richard Yong, with a caption which reads: 'I couldn't sleep, I couldn't eat. Who were we to play God?' Do you see that?

T.T. Durai: Yes.

Davinder Singh: Then below it is reported: 'NKF chairman Richard Yong on how the foundation ran dry in 1986 and had to choose among its 32 patients who should continue with dialysis, and who would have to be sent home with morphine to die. It hit home then. It was important to have 'healthy reserves that can withstand even the most dire economic times'.'

Implicit in that message was: 'Some years ago, we ran out of money.' Right?

T.T. Durai: Yes.

Davinder Singh: There were people lying down in the beds and we had to choose who to give that money to and who had to go home. Right?

T.T. Durai: Yes.

Davinder Singh: And, therefore, we need the comfort of health reserves?

T.T. Durai: Yes.

Davinder Singh: So that that situation will not arise again?

T.T. Durai: Yes.

Davinder Singh: In other words, the reserves will be there for the patients who need the money?

T.T. Durai: Yes.

Davinder Singh: Not for fundraising, right?

T.T. Durai: Yes.

Davinder Singh (quoting from the article): 'I couldn't sleep; I couldn't eat. Who were we to play God?' It hit home then: It was important to have 'healthy reserves that can withstand even the most dire economic times', and self-generated income 'so that we can be independent, instead of on our knees, poor and begging for life'.

In other words, without any more donations, we can't keep these patients alive?

T.T. Durai: Yes.

Davinder Singh: Yet, the suggestion was made that (the NKF reserves could last) only for three years. That is another false suggestion, is it not?

T.T. Durai: Not an accurate suggestion.

Davinder Singh: Sorry?

T.T. Durai: Not correct.

Davinder Singh: I used the word 'false'. Do you agree with me?

T.T. Durai: It is a matter of opinion.

Davinder Singh: Is there a difference, in your view?

T.T. Durai: No, it is not a correct comment.

Davinder Singh: Is it true?

T.T. Durai: It is inaccurate.

Davinder Singh: > Answer my question, sir, please. Is it true or false?

T.T. Durai: 'False' implies an intent to deceive. I cannot comment on that.

Davinder Singh: You can, actually, because...

T.T. Durai: I do not think there was any intent to deceive.

Davinder Singh: After what we have heard, after what we have seen from the accounts, you still say that there is no intent to deceive?

T.T. Durai: No. I mean, we honestly believed that we should raise as much money to help the patients for the future. That is the way my colleagues and I work in the foundation.

Davinder Singh: Are you prepared to take out an advertisement in tomorrow's papers, apologising to Singaporeans to say: 'We did not intend to deceive but, unfortunately, you have been deceived. The money is not going to last merely three years, it will last between 30 and 40 years.' Are you prepared to do that?

T.T. Durai: No, I am not. I am not prepared to do that. I am just saying that we wanted to raise as much money for the patients' future.

Justice Tan Lee Meng: Mr Durai, it will help if you answer the question.

T.T. Durai: No.

Davinder Singh: Why? Why are you not prepared to come clean? We already know that, to use your word, there was an 'inaccuracy'. Why are you not prepared to come clean? This is people's money, you know.

T.T. Durai: It is for the people.

Davinder Singh: These are people who earn so little, giving. Why are you not prepared to tell them the truth?

T.T. Durai: The money is for the people.

Davinder Singh: And your taps.

ON THE STATED NUMBER OF PATIENTS
T.T. Durai: Error in patient numbers not so material at that point

THE National Kidney Foundation claimed that it had 3,000 patients. But did it have only 2,000?

And if the right number was 2,000, why was the record not set straight so the public would know how many sick people needed help?

In a letter published in The Straits Times Forum Page on April 9 last year, Dr Gerard Chuah, chairman of the NKF Children's Medical Fund, said 3,000 dialysis patients were saved every year.

Senior Counsel Davinder Singh took NKF chief executive T.T. Durai to task yesterday for not correcting the figure.

Mr Durai admitted it was a mistake, but insisted there had been no intention to deceive the public. Here is an excerpt of their exchange.

Davinder Singh: You knew it was an error?

T.T. Durai: Yes.

Davinder Singh: Did you correct it?

T.T. Durai: No, I did not correct.

Davinder Singh: You accept it was your responsibility to correct it?

T.T. Durai: Yes.

Davinder Singh: Why did you not?

T.T. Durai: I thought it was not something which was so material at that point. I went on the basis the public supported us on the basis of our comprehensive programme.

Questioned further, he admitted it was material for the public to know how many patients the NKF served.

Davinder Singh: Therefore, there is a tremendous responsibility on the part of NKF and you to be precise, because everything that you say is designed to and has an effect on the decision-making process of the donor, right?

T.T. Durai: Yes.

Davinder Singh: If your object is to go out and get as much funds as possible, then clearly it is in your interests to demonstrate a great need for those funds, right?

T.T. Durai: Yes.

Davinder Singh: To demonstrate a great need of those funds, you would want to play up certain facts or certain figures, right?

T.T. Durai: Not play up, state those figures.

Davinder Singh: State those figures. One of those figures that is relevant is the patient numbers?

T.T. Durai: Yes.

Davinder Singh: So you knew all along, and you continued to know that patient numbers have an impact on the donor?

T.T. Durai: It's one of the considerations, yes.

Davinder Singh: Why, then, if you knew that, and if you knew that it was misleading or inaccurate, and you knew that you have a responsibility to set it right, why did you not set it right?

T.T. Durai: Being in fundraising for a long time, we are of the view... I am of the view that people give money for the credibility of the organisation, for the number of programmes we run and (the number of patients) is just one of the considerations. It was not so material at that point of time.

Davinder Singh: We have passed that point.

T.T. Durai: That is the way I view it.

Davinder Singh: We have passed that point because you have accepted that it is one of the factors that the donor will have regard to.

T.T. Durai: Yes.

Davinder Singh: So stick with that. My question is ... why did you not correct the error?

T.T. Durai: I did not think it was of that major importance to correct the error.

Counsel then pointed out that by citing the figure 3,000 in his Forum letter, Dr Chuah had overstated the number of patients by almost 1,000.

Taking the figure of $2,600 that NKF says it spends on each patient, it gave the impression that it needed $31.2 million a year for those non-existent patients.

Davinder Singh: By overstating that number by 1,000, you have given the public the impression that you are in need of $30-over million when that is not true?

T.T. Durai: In a way, yes.

Davinder Singh: In a way. You see, one is either pregnant or one is not...

T.T. Durai: No, it was an error.

Davinder Singh: Is it false or is it true?

T.T. Durai: It is not correct, yes.

Davinder Singh: Another false statement, right?

T.T. Durai: It was not done intentionally.

Mr Durai said he accepted that it was false, but it not done deliberately. Counsel then asked again why he did not correct the error.

T.T. Durai: It was an oversight. I did not think it was material at that point of time, so I did not act on it. I had no intention to deceive.

Davinder Singh: How could that be an oversight?

T.T. Durai: Because insofar as I am concerned, the donor gives us money for a number of reasons and they give us money because the brand of the NKF... and I did not think it was so important at that point of time to correct this error. That is the way I felt.

Davinder Singh: If it was for the brand of the NKF, why bother to state patient numbers? The brand would do the selling. Right? Obviously the patient numbers add a gloss, are a selling point?

T.T. Durai: One of the selling points.

Davinder Singh: How could it be an oversight?

T.T. Durai: I had no intention otherwise. That is the truth.

Mrs Goh: I've full trust in NKF and its CEO

THE NKF's patron, Mrs Goh Chok Tong, told reporters at the close of the case that she had complete trust in the organisation and its chief executive, Mr T.T. Durai.

She had come to court on both days of the hearing and sat on the NKF side. Yesterday, she was there for part of the morning and again in the afternoon.

As Senior Counsel Davinder Singh led Mr Durai to concede point by point that he had no case, Mrs Goh, a lawyer, could be seen shaking her head.

After the hearing, Mrs Goh was asked by reporters what she thought about the way the case went.

She said it did not make sense to her to attack an organisation which helped the sick. All the NKF had wanted from The Straits Times was a retraction, she said, but the case had been extended to question NKF's transparency and 'expensive things'
'Why make a fuss out of it?' she asked.

She said she would continue as patron, and added: 'I have complete trust in the NKF and Mr Durai.'

Asked if Mr Durai's annual salary and bonuses were 'excessive', she replied: 'For a person who runs a million-dollar charitable organisation, $600,000 is peanuts as it has a few hundred millions in reserves.'

NKF donors petition online for Durai's removal

AN ONLINE petition has been started by outraged donors to the National Kidney Foundation, asking for its chief executive officer T.T. Durai to be removed from his position because he has 'breached the trust of the people of Singapore'.

As at 12:00pm, it had drawn more than 2,000 signatures at this website: www.petitiononline.com.

The petition also asks for more transparency - the NKF must show the public how much of its funds goes into helping kidney patients and how much for expenses.

It adds that unless the NKF comes clean with this information, the parties to the petition would be parking their money elsewhere, in 'more deserving organisations' such as the Kidney Dialysis Foundation, the Community Chest and the Salvation Army.

Several Straits Times readers have also e-mailed and faxed the newspaper to say that they are glad the truth is exposed. Many expressed shock and disappointment at this breach of their trust.

NKF premises vandalised
The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) building in Kim Keat Road was vandalised late on Tuesday night with the words 'Liar, Liar' spray-painted in red, The New Paper reported on Wednesday.

When The Straits Times went to check it at about 9am on Wednesday morning, the graffiti had already been covered over by NKF with a fresh coat of white paint. A banner covered an NKF sign that was defaced.

The angry red words were both in English and Mandarin, with words like 'hang Turi' and 'big liar' spray-painted in bold all over the outer walls of the building.

The petition and graffiti are both a reaction from angry people who have been donating to the NKF's various fund-raising efforts in the belief that their money was mainly going into helping fund kidney patients' dialysis treatments.

These benefactors were stunned and shocked to find out in a court hearing on Monday that Mr Durai has been getting 10- to 12-month bonuses on top of his $25,000-a-month salary.

This made his annual salary between $550,000 and $600,000, or $1.8 million in total over the past three years.

This fact, and the disclosure that he had been flying first class on NKF's funds, emerged on Day 1 of NKF's defamation suit against Singapore Press Holdings.

The NKF had first filed the suit after The Straits Times published an article on April 19 last year, which reported that a gold-plated tap had been installed and later replaced in the en suite bathroom in Mr Durai's office.

The NKF and Mr Durai contend that this is not the case and that the words in the article had damaged its reputation by implying that donors' funds were being misused.

On Wednesday, what was to have been Day 2, the NKF suddenly dropped the suit. This followed close questioning by SPH's counsel Davinder Singh, who got Mr Durai to concede that there had been nothing defamatory about the article, headlined 'The NKF: Controversially ahead of its time?'

By the time the suit was dropped, more revelations had come about the NKF's use of funds: Its kitty had enough money to run the dialysis programme for 30 more years, not three years as claimed; the NKF was helping 2,000 kidney patients, not 3,000 as claimed.

Two out of every three Singaporeans donate to the NKF, which is entirely dependent on public funds for its dialysis programmes. It recently started a fund to help cancer patients as well.

Thanks Bro J4F for the effort taken to post the info for all of us. Was a really enlightening reading experience. I can only say it confirms what we already knew since last year and my guess is that this is just the tip of the iceberg with more issues still remaining hidden (Com Chest,Ren Ci...) that may be dragged out in time. Meanwhile , I still prefer to do direct donations rather than thru such orgs. I can see the tsunami relief fund for Aceh will also have such issues as well.
Anyways, thanks for the long post. :) Sorry can't up your rep point but thats not so important..perhaps when in Shanghai...I'll buy you a drink instead.

First and foremost Bro just4fun, thank you so much for your effort! Very much appreciated! It really came as quite a shock to hear about such a thing. It is indeed shocking! To think that we contribute to charities to help out the less fortunate but unwittingly fuel a greater evil.. it is so sad.. can't help feeling "cheated"...

Keep the postings coming bro! I'm sure those bros who already subscribed to Straits Times will understand and appreciate your effort.. but instead of contributing money, all I can do here right now would be to up your points!

And just to clarify, for the sake of transparency, there is no Boss or Towkay in this thread.. just bros with questions and bros with answers/findings.. no such thing as wasting bandwidth.. since as long as it benefits anyone, all posts are relevant...

Meanwhile , I still prefer to do direct donations rather than thru such orgs. I can see the tsunami relief fund for Aceh will also have such issues as well.
Anyways, thanks for the long post. :) Sorry can't up your rep point but thats not so important..perhaps when in Shanghai...I'll buy you a drink instead.

cheers

NKF saga: Calls for full transparency

By Salma Khalik
HEALTH CORRESPONDENT

THE National Kidney Foundation began its day yesterday with graffiti splashed on its walls - and by 5.30pm, more than 3,800 of its regular donors had stopped their contributions

Calls for NKF chief T. T. Durai's resignation took concrete form in an online petition started by full-time national serviceman Lawrence Tan, garnering over 18,000 signatures as at midnight.

Public outrage reached an unprecedented scale, with The Straits Times newsroom inundated with hundreds of e-mail messages and dozens of calls to its hotline.

Readers were angry at the size of chief executive officer Durai's salary and his perks, as well as how the NKF had misled the public on the number of years its reserves will last and the number of patients it treats.

But even as vitriol was poured on Singapore's biggest charity, calmer voices pointed out that there were kidney patients in need of donations - and that the episode should not diminish contributions to charity.

Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan told The Straits Times yesterday the NKF must provide more information and explain its actions to regain the public's confidence. 'The key to gaining confidence is full transparency.' But he made it clear he will continue donating to charity, whether it is to the NKF, ComChest or others 'because there are people out there who can benefit from it'.

In court this week, the NKF admitted to having $260 million in reserves, enough to subsidise dialysis treatment for 30 years at the current subsidy rates - not the three years it has consistently maintained.

Mr Khaw, who had spoken in support of the NKF when it maintained that three years was how long its reserves would last, had this advice for the NKF yesterday: 'If there was bad judgment, then acknowledge it and move on.'

Politicians like MP Chong Weng Chiew echoed Mr Khaw's call for greater transparency, in particular, its expenditure 'on publicity, manpower, administration and patients'. He also wants to know how the NKF assesses patients for subsidies, as he had been approached many times by kidney-failure patients who had been rejected by the NKF.

The issue of transparency was a key plank in The Straits Times' defence against the defamation suit brought on by NKF and Mr Durai.

Among other things, SPH's lawyer, Mr Davinder Singh, spoke of the difficulty of getting the NKF to disclose that Mr Durai earned more than half a million dollars a year and how, contrary to its oft-stated position, he had travelled first class.

The NKF withdrew its suit against Singapore Press Holdings and journalist Susan Long on Tuesday.

Lawyers for the two parties met again at a hearing in Justice Tan Lee Meng's chambers to address the issue of costs yesterday. The matter has been adjourned to Monday.

It was Ms Long's article published on April 19 last year that was the subject of contention, particularly its opening paragraphs which reported lavish toilet fittings in the bathroom of the CEO's private office.

Before withdrawing the suit on Tuesday, Mr Durai admitted in court that the article was fair and accurate and told reporters after the hearing that he would not resign 'unless the people want him to'.

Non-constituency MP Steve Chia said yesterday Mr Durai should resign as 'he has lost his moral authority to ask for money'.

NKF staff, however, are standing by their chief. Ms Michelle Ang, NKF's deputy director of corporate communications, said: 'They are still solidly behind him and know the high degree of his commitment to NKF.'

HQ's walls smeared with abuse

Staff paint over the graffiti against CEO at NKF building; donors condemn vandalism
By Khushwant Singh

VANDALS daubed the white perimeter walls of the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) building with abuse early yesterday morning.

Spray-painted in red were the words 'liar' and 'Hang Turi', referring to NKF chief executive T.T. Durai. 'Big liar' and 'Durai cheats heaven' were also painted in Chinese on the wall.

Police received a call at 5.20am and a police car was dispatched to the NKF building at 81, Kim Keat Road. Maintenance staff started painting over the graffiti at about 7am. A defaced signboard was covered with newspapers and a yellow piece of cloth.

By 9am, the wall had been fully painted over.

NKF's deputy director of corporate communications Michelle Ang said guards deployed inside the NKF premises did not see the vandals. She added that the foundation was deluged with abusive calls on Tuesday in the wake of revelations about Mr Durai's salary, travel habits and job perks.

Many donors have expressed their anger and disappointment by cancelling donations, but all were united in their condemnation of the vandals.

The penalty for vandalism is a fine of up to $2,000 or jail of up to three years, and between three and eight strokes of the cane.

Store-owner Teoh Kah Chay, 71, a regular donor for more than 10 years, said: 'Stop donating but don't vandalise, because NKF will have to spend its money on repairs and not on patients.' He intends to cancel his $15 monthly donation through his credit card and will restart only after Mr Durai resigns

3,800 cancel monthly donations

NKF sets up hotline for those wanting to cancel credit card donations

SEVERAL thousand upset supporters of the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) yesterday cancelled their monthly donations to the charity.

Bank call centres, branches and Internet platforms as well as the charity itself were swamped by donors disenchanted by the revelations from the court this week.

The NKF said that by 5.30pm, 3,800 people had cancelled donations, some by contacting the foundation directly but many others - an estimated 2,350 - through their banks.

The NKF had to set up a hotline for people wanting to cancel their credit card donations, after banks could not help their customers.

That was because credit card donation transactions were agreements between the NKF and individuals.

Now those who want to end these credit card arrangements can call 1800-351-5435, fax their request to 6253-0417 or e-mail [email protected]

Several people went to the NKF headquarters to stop donating by Giro.

Among them was cabby Vincent Yap, 46, who said that he and his wife had been donating $6 a month each for about six years.

'I wanted to stop the donations some time ago when I heard that they have a lot of money, but my wife stopped me,' he said.

'This time... I am stopping our donations.'

A 48-year-old civil servant, who declined to be named, went to the NKF to cancel his donation after failing to get through by telephone.

The man, who has given $6 a month via Giro for five years, said he made 10 calls which went unanswered.

'I am very angry with the way they handled the money. They are not transparent. I'd heard stories but now that this court case has confirmed it, I am cancelling my donation.'

Systems analyst Ben Ng, 38, also went to the NKF to retrieve the $12 he donated recently.

'It's not the money. I can afford it,', he said, adding that it was the way the NKF handled donations that was not right.

But it wasn't all bad news for the charity.

Cabby Teo Kwee Lock, 57, gave $5.80 after receiving an NKF appeal via SMS.

'They do their part and I do my part. If they misuse their funds, they will have to answer to God,' he said.

'If everybody doesn't give, what will happen to the poor people?'

Those who want to end these credit card arrangements can call 1800-351-5435, fax their request to 6253-0417 or e-mail [email protected]

Even CEOs of this MNC don't fly First Class

AS A regular donor to the National Kidney Foundation (NKF), I would like to seek clarification and justification for the compensation package of its management team.

I was stunned by the $600,000 annual compensation NKF paid its CEO, and the lavish travel perks.

My previous employer was a multinational corporation with annual turnover in excess of US$80 billion. Even so, most of its regional CEOs are not entitled to travel in First Class on any flight, despite the fact that they are responsible for businesses with turnover many times that of NKF.

And here we are talking about a commercial entity that generates its own revenue, without any donations from the public.

For an organisation that depends on public donations, I do not agree with Mr T.T. Durai's statement that his compensation is a personal matter. The donors have the right to know how their donations are utilised.

If the CEOs of public companies disclose their pay packages in annual reports in the interest of transparency, shouldn't a non-profit organisation funded by public donations be even more obliged to have high levels of disclosure and transparency?

I am sure many members of the public are also curious to know what specialised skills set one must possess to manage NKF, in view of the high compensation package.

Without more transparency and disclosure on how funds are deployed, I doubt I will ever donate to NKF again, knowing that my money goes towards paying the excessive pay packages of its executives.

Staff give T.T. Durai standing ovation

They and board rally around him. Patient says many would've died if not for him
By Joyce Teo

THE staff at the National Kidney Foundation gave chief executive T.T. Durai a standing ovation yesterday evening after he gave a short address to a packed auditorium at NKF headquarters.

As he returned to work, staff and the NKF board rallied around their embattled CEO.

'He told us we have to carry on because the patients depend on us and not to let what happened to him affect us,' said NKF's deputy director of communications Michelle Ang.

'He works very hard and that's the only way anyone can run this place. He is relentless. He really does it for the patients.'

She added that apart from one day of compassionate leave, he has not taken a holiday since 1992, when he became chief executive.

Mr Job Loei, 41, manager of NKF's patient advancement department, has been undergoing subsidised dialysis for the past 12 years and said he owed Mr Durai his life. 'If the NKF was not around and Mr Durai not driving it, I don't think I would be here today.

'I've seen him work. It's his passion. He works seven days a week, by choice, for a larger cause.'

The former pastor said Mr Durai's integrity is not in question. 'He sets very high standards. For example, when we get New Year hampers, we can't take any. They will be channelled to the poor patients.'

Said NKF patient Yeo Say Ann, 36: 'If he was not around, many would have died. It's okay if the $262 million in reserves earns interest... It was always his intention to build up the reserves.'

According to both staff and patients, Mr Durai believes able kidney patients should contribute to society, so they do not take donor funds for granted.

Mr William Tan, 42, an NKF patient since 1997, is a case in point.

Said Mr Tan: 'When I first met him in 1997 to ask for subsidies, he scolded me. He said he wouldn't lower my co-payment if I didn't work. My impression of him was very bad... But I realised he was trying to tell me not to give up on life.'

Mr Durai's words pushed him to get a job and a diploma in computer studies. Added Mr Tan: 'His entire life is spent on building up the organisation. He deserves his pay.'

Like Mr Tan, Mr Loei felt that Mr Durai's $25,000 pay and generous bonuses are not excessive.

'The bottom line is how many lives you have saved.'

Stopping donations only punishes patients

I WAS riveted by the articles on the legal case between the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) and Singapore Press Holdings and the events that led to it (ST, July 12).

I believe many readers, like myself, would have been properly outraged by the actions of Mr T.T. Durai, the NKF's chief executive officer.

The main principle behind NKF's ceaseless efforts to raise ever more funds despite having coffers overflowing with reserves of $189 million, it would have us believe, is that every cent counts.

Every Singaporean knows, thanks to NKF's publicity efforts and the perennial NKF Charity Show, that individual bills for dialysis for kidney patients can run into thousands of dollars and, thus, donations, no matter how small, are always welcome.

In fact, NKF has a donation programme called Lifedrops, of which I am a participant, that allows donors to pledge a small monthly amount to its cause. The latest revelations have left me feeling a little like a fool. How many 'Life- drops', may I ask, were allowed to dribble away to fund Mr Durai's 12-month performance bonus in 2003? At the minimum amount of $5 a month, one 'Lifedrop' amounts to $60 a year. Mr Durai's bonus, at $25,000 for 12 months, comes up to $300,000. This means that approximately 5,000 well-meaning contributors like myself have done absolutely nothing to help kidney patients with our donations.

Yet, the victims at the centre of all this are not us, but the kidney patients. If there is a backlash, and there surely will be one, they will be the ones who will suffer, NKF's reserves notwithstanding.

Much as I would like to make a statement to NKF and cease my monthly contributions and boycott future NKF charity shows, and urge others to follow, to do so would only punish the very patients that we wanted to help in the first place.

I therefore appeal for donors to keep a cool head. Let us show our displeasure in ways other than withdrawing all financial support. We may feel more than a little betrayed by NKF, but let us not betray the kidney patients. Two wrongs do not make a right.

Damn swee...this really makes my day. Been waiting for such scams to get what they deserve. And the best part is this Durai guy brought it on himself...he must have been so overconfident and complacent that public has complete trust in him that he goes after SPH for such small minor report on gold taps. If he just let that pass, he could carry on his lavish lifestyle. Reminds one of the serial killer who is so confident that he openly leaves clue so that others can catch him.

Anyway, tks bro just4fun for the updates... :D

NKF CEO and board quit

Interim chairman expected by weekend and a new board to be constituted quickly
By Bertha Henson
SUPERVISING EDITOR (HOME)

THEIR faces grim, National Kidney Foundation chief T.T. Durai and board chairman Richard Yong emerged from the Health Ministry building at 3.30pm yesterday.

They were hustled into cars, declining to say what had transpired during their meeting earlier with Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan.

This was what happened.

They had gone to consult Mr Khaw on what they should do in the wake of public outrage over the way the NKF rewarded its chief and misled people into thinking it needed more money.

They were told 'the status quo would not do'.

They asked if the board should make way for new leaders. Mr Khaw's reply: 'That would certainly be very helpful.' That phrase marked the end of a 37-year association between Mr Durai and Singapore's largest charity.

At 6.30pm, Mr Khaw announced the resignation of Mr Durai and the entire NKF board at a press conference attended by Mr Durai, Mr Yong and NKF board vice-chairman Alwyn Lim.

Asked about his future, the NKF CEO of 13 years told reporters that his 'paramount interest' now was to help Mr Khaw in the transition stage.

Businessman Piragasam Singaravelu, 45, whom the NKF sued for libel in December 1998, described the en masse resignation last night as the 'best news for Singaporeans, especially those who donated to NKF'.

Right up to yesterday morning, it had looked as though Mr Durai, 57, intended to ride out the controversy that began with NKF's lawsuit against The Straits Times over expensive toilet fittings - and ended with disclosures it had paid its CEO $1.8 million over three years, allowed him first class air travel and maintained his private car.

Calls for Mr Durai's resignation escalated with close to 40,000 signatures put on an online petition, and more than 6,800 donors cancelling their monthly contributions to the charity in two days.

The NKF Cancer Show on Channel U last night made no attempt to solicit donations from the viewing public, in line with the suspension of canvassing activities.

Mr Khaw hopes to find an interim chairman by the weekend and get a board constituted quickly to review NKF's practices, serve kidney patients and restore public confidence in the institution.

Among the board's tasks: To determine if the NKF reserves, now standing at $260 million, would last 40 years as in the 'rosy picture' painted in the media, or the NKF's 'tragic' three years.

Despite the 'unfortunate turn of events', Mr Khaw issued the reminder that the NKF had done much good over the years, with Singapore's dialysis care among the best in the world.

The NKF had transformed itself into such an effective fund-raiser that it was he who had asked Mr Durai to branch into serving cancer patients as well, he disclosed.

Although some might argue that 'some of the techniques may be a little bit outside OB markers', he said he was in favour of more 'NKFs' with professionals running their fund-raising operations.

With one big caveat.

Because the 'stakeholders' are donors, they need to know as much as possible about the finances and practices of those out for the charity dollar.

'As I always maintain, donation is voluntary. So it is self-regulating in that sense because if you are so opaque, secretive or whatever, who would donate to you? But the more transparent you are, I think you win greater public trust,' he said.

The larger issue, however, is whether Singaporeans are ready for charities to be run like corporations with key performance indicators and employment contracts.

He asked: 'Should VWOs be uncontroversial and remain amateurish, old-style, collect little... or is there not a place in Singapore for a different kind of VWO?'

But what was clear: he himself would continue donating to the NKF because patients would benefit. The question of whether too much money had been collected could always be settled by channelling the money to other causes.

He made a plea to the public not to delve into 'history', but to restore the NKF by building on its strengths. 'I am determined to help... NKF... emerge from this incident even stronger so that patients continue to be served.'

Last night's announcement of an interim committee replacing the current board was welcomed all round. Those contacted want the committee to go through NKF books with 'a fine-tooth comb', as insurance adviser Robert Young, 53, put it.

Said Mr Brandon Lee, 33, a businessman: 'We also want the Government to put in measures to make sure such things don't happen again.'

Mr Johari Marzuki, 46, father of four and an NKF patient for 15 years has only one item on his wish list: 'I hope people don't react emotionally and cancel their donations. There are so many lives that depend on it.'

Mrs Goh Chok Tong steps down as charity's patron

THE wife of Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong has resigned as patron of the National Kidney Foundation .

She said her decision was triggered by the NKF Board's resignation to let a new board be appointed to recover public confidence in the organisation. 'To give the NKF a fresh start, I have also decided to relinquish my position as patron,' she said in a three-paragraph statement.

Mrs Goh, who had said she was fully behind Mr Durai after he dropped the NKF suit against The Straits Times on Tuesday, noted NKF's noble mission in helping people with failed kidneys for more than 30 years. She added: 'This has been a sad and unfortunate episode.'

She hoped that Singaporeans would continue to support NKF's efforts. 'As patron, my concern has been to help the patients and their families. I am deeply grateful to Singaporeans for supporting NKF through the years,' she said.

Her statement was issued within an hour of Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan's announcement that NKF board members and chief executive T.T. Durai were stepping down. Mr Khaw had expressed the hope that she would stay on to help him in the NKF, but 'it's really a decision she has to make herself'.

He also took pains to explain that a patron has no board or management responsibilities.

He himself is a patron of some temples. 'They always invite us because they think, and it is true, (we are a) useful public symbol to help them in fund-raising.' Then with a laugh, he made a confession: 'I really don't know what they are doing and so on, although... I attend some of their functions. I hope they are doing the right thing.'

Bro Shengge,
Thanks for the compliments. Nothing to it as I believed many bros knew about that shop locality as it's on the busiest street, infront of the most renown hotel in Shanghai city though....

Indeed we bros had a few great gatherings lately but not to my effort though but rather to everyone's effort in participating in it.

Just had a little makan session at Bro WhambamTYM's house together with Bro Caffeine on Sunday. Cooked up a little 'storm' i.e. curry chicken, sweet & spicy pork ribs, Sambal Balachan 'La-la' cockles, Balachan Kangkong.....yummy! Had a relaxing night there chatting away, watching DVDs.

Preferred more on such makan sessions though....fills one's tummy & also served the purpose on catching up as well....most of all, less harm on both health & pocket.

Till then, cheerios to all bros....

Well said! Tomorrow will always be better.. it cannot rain all the time.. right?

My simple philosophy is:
It's just a matter of not commiting the same "mistakes" over and over again.. to make mistakes is human.. to draw experience from mistakes is wise.. to make the same mistakes over and over again is pure stupidity...

Weather the storm and come out stronger.. but stronger not necessarily mean prouder.. and that's what I admire about you my Big Big Bro! So learned yet truly humble and ever so willing to share life's learnings.. so much to learn from you..

Well said, Bro shanghaitan,

I have benefitted from the experience of many people who are older than me during my younger days. I think it would be only fair that I should share my humble opinion and shallow knowledge to many brothers in the forum. It hurts me right deep in my heart when I witness brothers fall into traps and at the same time, find myself helpless and redundant. This summarises my purpose of sharing with brothers.

When I was much younger and was deeply involved with a Harbin girl, to an extent that even though I knew the net is closing in, I was still walking towards the net. Fortunately, one older brother told me:

You have been taught, to obtain the number 2, you do the sum 1 plus 1. But, to survive and to be wise in China (or elsewhere), you have to be like the locals to find different ways to obtain the same results: 5 -3, 10 - 8, 1000002 -100000 also give you the number 2. I then understood the game played by the Harbin girl.

I benefitted from others and it is only fair that I share with others. Simply that!

My simple philosophy is:
It's just a matter of not commiting the same "mistakes" over and over again.. to make mistakes is human.. to draw experience from mistakes is wise.. to make the same mistakes over and over again is pure stupidity...

Dear Uncle P.T.R.

It just benefits the younger naive bro’s like me ! :p

I benefitted from others and it is only fair that I share with others. Simply that!

Dear Bro PTR,
You said well, very very well.
It is very unfortunate that, there are still some bros did not understand what some of the senior bros here trying to share with them. I think bro Shanghaitan knows who are those I am referring to. Anyway, sad to see they want to learn it the hard way.
I personally benefitted a lot from your experiences and help, especially like where does the moon rise?

Since there are 2 simple men here, I am just another ordinary and normal guy around. :p

Cheers!

Dear Bro ChineAlleWay,
I'd like to say that I'm honored... but alas, I myself is still a trainee in this profession called "life".. have yet to attain Master status unlike some of the seasoned, learned veteran bros here (some who remained "invisible" while others shines brighter than the morning star)... what I share is what I've learnt, from personal experiences or others' experiences... and will continue to share whatever and whenever possible..

Let us be trainees together and find a good "trainer" for ourselves... Bros we can be.. fellow trainees.. sure! But I'm definitely not qualified to be a trainer.. not by a long shot yet..

Have a great life in China! Don't end up like moi! hahahaha..

We can have another TC and TA (Tea Appreciation) session again in WhamBam's place. Hahaha... Maybe we should not impose on him...

Dear Bro shengge,

Oh No! The same topic about the Moon Rise again? I though we have discussed already in length for two consecutive nights. I do not think this is a topic that will interest people here, becase the answer is the moon appears to rise from the west, taking the earth magnetic poles as reference. Okay.

Your problem sounds familiar.... Perhaps an alternative solution would be to leave your gf at your current home and find a way into your "new" girl's place. Better still rent another place for your "new" chick and if you can even sianz them ..who knows a threesome ....Hmmm. Herding instinct. Yup :)

Dear Bro bbbbb,
thanks for the compliments & kinds words here on me.
I'm no big bro here as I have said b4 many atimes. Just merely sharing what my few cents worth of suggestions or opinions here to all pls..

U can simply try my suggestion as mentioned earlier or otherwise, should your present gal u choose to ditch away from, wants to stay on just tell her that your firm is posting another colleague here for good as biz expansion plans. So that makes it not convenient for herto stay....

But end of the day, juggling between 2 gals is very, very tedious...experience tells me bro.
Perhaps u should just make up your mind who u wanna be with & tell the other one to go ....short & sharp bro! In China, should 2 gals whom they r with u at the same time, meet each other knowing that fact.......only 2 kinda situations would arises...

1) They both end up in a cat fight with each other infront of , if worst case scenario, on a street & that is very "malu" bro! U end up with no one ....

2) or, one of them would leave, but bear in mind u might have to live your days in suspense, always being wary of the one that left would seek some kinda revenge on u & the other gal, and also the other gal who's left being with u would 1 night wake up & do 'something' to u as well (i.e taking a pair of scissors)......

Being a foreigner here, it always pay to be more cautious, be it for fun or work bro....

Have fun but have it safely....

Good Luck to you!

Actually, as much as you would like to have a stay in girl, I would advice against it... Unless of course you want to stay committed to just her alone... If it's just the game you want to play, the first thing you have to ensure, is to meet them at your convenience... And not have any of them stay in as your gf... That way, you can bring them back when you want, and bring others back when it happens you want to change your taste..

Some people might shoot, flame or zap me for saying such things, but hell, this is sammyboy, and since we're exchanging pointers, here's my two cents worth. And also, please remember that my sugggestion is very harsh... Harsh in the sense whereby it's only for people who are out to play games and not think about the girl(s) feelings...

Indeed Bro bbbbb!
You are right! Bro SGP69 is a Master... a true Master! Learn from him and you will be able to navigate through the many "land mines" along the path that you have chosen...

Herding is an Art... Takes skill to handle more than one cow at any given time... learn your ropes well and you'll have a very enjoyable time in China.. Failure is no longer an option once you embark on this "journey" as it may become "life threatening" in extreme cases..

Happy herding...

Well, to be fair to the girls, the key point is to let them know that there won't be anything coming out of the "relationship"... So if they're willing to partake in the game, then let everyone have fun... At least no one is being let down, right?

Too bad, I no longer can do so.

Bro Shengge,
Since when do I have any tricks to learn from eh??? All I have is how to be good with my Empress around in town.....
Food is now my agenda rather than any other matters bro....dun stir anything up for me pls.....

As I have been lately doing baking cakes & cooking....refer to my recent posting on last Sunday night makan session had with Bro WhamBamTYM & Bro Caffeine....

Maybe bros here should be checking with u instead Bro Shengge.....U r more Senior in terms of time spent here....u r a better candidate to assume the position of Mentor to Bro bbbbb......I was merely saying what I seen & heard from friends...

Dear Bros,
Interesting exchanges indeed. I tend to agree more with Bro WhamBam, and the possible consequencse rightfully pointed described by Bro SGP. My most recent experience, end of last year, was only to have two girls in the same service apartment that some of you have been to. After just one night, one of them disappeared the next morning without a word. She was indeed the one who agreed for me to house another girl in the same apartment. I lost her since then, and unwillingly so. You see, it is difficult to have two girls at the same time, something unhappy would eventually happen. Luckily, I have nothing missing from this incident (Consequence 2 point out by SGP - a pair of scissors).

Just stay with one, and at the same time, like WhamBam said, let her know that nothing would come out of the relationship. Do not project false hope.

My 2 cent worth.

Bro WhamBamTYM,
Well said bro!!! Maybe u should make it known to all bros here that what u have mentioned herein is that u r speaking from your true own experiences......kekekeke.......:P

Cheerios.........

Big Bro SGP69,
Pardon my bad english...
You like that say your bro GOOT MEH?? You are by far the most successful Cow herder among all the bros I've met.. can rear at home and still have others running around at the same time... that's why you're the MASTER mah...

Bro WhamBamTYM,
You are such a kind soul sharing whatever experience you may have, personal or otherwise.. similarly, other bros contribute with whatever and whenever they can..

My personal view is that learning does not need to be personal experiences to be effective.. different people reacts to different events differently.. some have the ability to view things or events (even non-personal ones) and discover deeper meanings and learnings.. while others go through life meeting a multitude of events and still not learn a single thing.. the whole idea is for those who think they have "learnt" something to share.. it will be up to individuals to absord and adapt.. same experience shared.. different outcomes.. as that depends on individuals..

Hope to see more contributions from masters like SGP69, WhamBamTYM, Junior Cannibal.. all with different "styles" of handling such situations and unique in their own ways.... and of course my Big Big Bro PuTonRen...

Cheerio~!
BLAND...
